Teaching writing is hard. Most teacher preparation programs do a poor job of equipping teachers to teach writing to novice writers, just as they have struggled to prepare teachers to teach reading. The hard truth is that while we have begun to address the reading instructional crisis in this country, the writing crisis has largely been ignored. Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin, so we must give writing the same level of focus and priority as reading. Showing students a finished writing product is not the same as teaching them how to write. Talking about writing is also not the same as teaching writing. Novice writers need the same kind of explicit, systematic instruction that they receive in reading. To become fluent writers, students need teacher modeling, guided practice, and independent practice in writing, and it all starts at the sentence level.
