V is for vase. We used foil to create a vase that will hold a “flower” without it tipping over. We learned that crumpling the foil made it very difficult to re-use. We had to consider height, weight, and practice perseverance. What a fun STEM lesson!

Two days ago, I decided to stop doing the dishes. I make all the dinners and I am tired of having to do all the cleaning too. SINCE THEN this pile has appeared and at some point they are going to run out of spoons and cups and plates. Who will blink first? Not me.

Sometimes, what students need most, is a cheerleader... someone they know is in their corner. Sometimes, that’s what teachers need too.

Our School Board Vice Chair Christina Harrison, sharing observations that the Full Day Kindergarten team of 2017-18 had to use all the same skills students learn - reading, math, writing, social sciences, cooperation, teamwork to succeed. FDK dedication, Sept. 7. Thanks, Tina

With the back-to-school madness in full swing, it's important to take a step back and assess your kids' schedule. You may be surprised to learn that a too-busy schedule can do more harm than good. Find out why: buff.ly/2oeyxNw

We absolutely should teach that progress is often difficult, frustrating and even littered with failure. Our students must learn to push through difficulties, face their frustrations and learn from failures. It is our job to give them strategies they can employ.

I often say in my workshop that every second spent doing math does NOT have to be full of joy. We learn math to develop our thinking skills, shouldn’t it also develop skills & traits like work ethic? What worthwhile endeavor does not require hard work? nyti.ms/2OLVKCO?smid=n…

The best education does not prepare students for a test… or for a college… or for a job. It prepares them to keep learning.
