Direct instruction is joyful & leads pupils to success. Here is a *clip* where I use high frequency & high participation questioning in 3 phases: 1. Check for listening 2. Rehearsal 3. Check for understanding Established routines: all hands up, turn & talk, SLANT & ruler reading

Independent reading during school time (e.g., DEAR) has not had strong research support. New meta-analysis of 47 quasi-exp studies shows modest effects for reading motivation and word recognition, and no effect for comprehension. Article is open-access. journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

@Jo_Moore_Sci We are Edexcel IGCSE and we are starting with atomic structure into ions, formula of ions and ionic bonding. Rest of the bonding will be covered elsewhere as appropriate. I think it makes sense what you are suggesting. We felt our Y9s don't understand bonding so trying to split

We've had a few issues this year with launching straight into structure and bonding at start of year 10.
Is there any reason- I am perhaps missing- why we couldn't bring the first few lessons of chemical change and the first bit of quant forwards?? ...1/
