@jabberworks My son is at Durham Uni so had my first ever Mam card this Mother’s Day.
English

Since moving to England, it’s tricky knowing what to call my mother: is it ‘mum’ when talking about her to UK friends and ‘mom’ to US friends in the UK/friends in the USA? Now calling her ‘Mom’ to her face feels odd; sometimes I call her ‘Mummy’ but it feels facetious. Or my sister and I have taken to calling her ‘Mammy’ (as in ‘Mammy & Pappy’) but that’s sort of a joke, or ‘Mama’ to be more neutral. It doesn’t help that my Scottish dad likes winding her up.
I kind of miss the days when there was only one word and she was Mom.

Wildlands by Brogen Murphy might just be my book of the year. Reminiscent of @PiersTorday Jess Butterworth and Sophie Kirtley. I loved the flora and fauna and brilliant sisters. I do hope they went back for the 🐻!

#bookaday If Pets Wrote Poems #susanjohnstontaylor @sandie_sonke What a great bk showing 16 poems written by historical figures in the style of poems as if their pets had written them. This was very cute and funny. #parody pub 3/10

Just finished @yaba_badoe Man-man and the Tree of Memories. Carnival, dance, enslavement, time travel and family dynamics combine with an unwell mother to make a fascinating tale that elicits both joy (carnival) and horror (slave capture). My first book featuring Haiti. Recommend

Adventuremice Of Mice and Mummies is so fun! And gorgeously illustrated as well. Thrilled to see ‘Wonderful things’ is included. Taking it to Y3 who are learning about ancient Egypt right now. @jabberworks @philipreeve1

@adiba_j Nadia Islam on the Record is a perfect Ramadan read with an eco thread. Set in Bangladeshi during 8 year old Nadia’s first Ramadan of fasting. She learns a lot - as did I - about Ramadan and flooding. Thanks for the loan, Em! 🇧🇩
