When God has a plan… From selling bhatura chole at Vivek Public School in 1989, to opening Lawrence Garden Banquet from the back of my house in Amritsar in 1990. In 1991, I chose culinary arts— a decision that embarrassed almost everyone except my grandmother. There were years of humiliation I rarely speak about. Moments that nearly broke me. In 2000, when my banquet was torn down, I almost gave up. Instead, I moved to the United States and started over. Cleaning homes. Selling food on the streets of TriBeCa. Sleeping at Grand Central. Experiencing homelessness at NYC Rescue. Sleepless nights. Being called “Curry Boy” on the 7 train. And still, I kept going. From there… 8 Michelin stars. Then losing myself again. Then starting over—one last time as a promise to my sister—with Bungalow. And now… TIME100 Most Influential People in the World 2026. I’m still trying to process it. The journey continues.

His name is Ashok Khemka. IIT Kharagpur. PhD from TIFR. IAS 1991 batch. In 2012 he was Director General of Land Consolidation in Haryana. He found a land deal where Robert Vadra’s company bought 3.5 acres in Gurugram for Rs 7.5 crore and sold it to DLF for Rs 58 crore within weeks. 700 percent profit. No physical development. Fraudulent mutation approvals. He cancelled the deal and declared it illegal. Within 10 days he was transferred. That was transfer number 1 of 57. 57 transfers in 34 years. One every 6 months. Every time he exposed corruption in a new department he was moved to a less significant one. Archives. Archaeology. Printing and Stationery. His batchmates became Secretaries to the Government of India. He was sent to manage old records. He posted on X after his 53rd transfer. The reward for honesty is humiliation. He retired in April 2025 as Additional Chief Secretary. He never became Chief Secretary. No medal. No recognition. Just 57 punishments for doing his job.

This needs to be said: We are at Jim Corbett and apparently there is no restriction on loud music till 10:30pm in the night. The roads are full of cars speeding around, at least 30 jeeps plying in one area of the forest, you can see brunt land on both sides and massive tree felling. So guilty of attending a family wedding here, I cannot say. There’s one I skipped because I didn’t want to be a party to destroying the habitat of animals. But why is Uttarakhand government allowing weddings in a forest reserve? I've just started reading this new book by Shekhar Khare, a renowned number theorist at @UCLA, and I highly recommend it. It takes the reader on an intellectual adventure, with very illuminating analogies and vivid storytelling. It's a book about some brilliant math, but it also has a great heart.

The role of a PhD supervisor is to provide a period of training that can lead to diverse career paths - the choice of which lies with the PhD aspirant. Not foster a lineage of students who forever feel 'less' for not wanting to or getting into academia. 🧪

Do you observe and check this while buying your Bananas? Have a close look at the two different banana strips, the top one with a mild green stem is from a plant that has been naturally ripened. While the bottom one is completely yellow till the stem, this has been ripened with chemicals! If each one of us observe this and ask questions to our vendors, then the chain will go back to the farmer who will be discouraged to use chemicals on food. Fruits and veggies grown by natural farming methods are friendly on our gut and keep the soil nourished as well!
