Unsolicited teacher advice: kids need on-ramps, especially for procedural type things. A fair bit of the "art" of teaching is sussing out when kids are being disruptive/avoiding work on purpose, and when they just don't know, in practical terms, how to start

@heymrsbond But it’s all a crapshoot. Sometimes it’s smoother than other years. I always plan for way more activities than I get to. And then try not to be hard on myself when we don’t move through things as quick as I’d like. First day is hard.

@heymrsbond I do cup stacking team builder and having them decorate a leaf with their names/prompts (goals and all). I try to get the leaves up (as part of “tree”) by day two so they come in seeing they’re already a part of classroom decor. Everything else is slightly diff each year.

@heymrsbond I teach 5th but have done with older grades too. I think it would be trickier the younger you went.

@heymrsbond The cup stacking activity is my favorite. It’s about process not result and it fun to see diff groups and talk through their decision making and strategies. Found it online YEARS ago but it’s pretty self explanatory and easy to make. Give kids as little directions as possible.

@wokeSTEMteacher All this being said. There’s a fine line between building relationships and having appropriate boundaries.

@wokeSTEMteacher Someone I respect a lot told me to love them. Truly, authentically. And since then I’ve always been able to spot when a teacher doesn’t. I also think a lot about my nieces, white privileged young women. How dare I give my students anything less than they get at school?
