@FixingEducation #5 for me. Portable teacher. Kids take forever to put on their outdoor shoes to leave (especially in winter). Now its 25m, plus I'm far from bathrooms and break rooms. No time to mark or prep or email. Half my lunches are duty.

WHY ARE TEACHERS LEAVING THE PROFESSION? 1. Inadequate preparation for new teachers 2. Lack of support 3. Class sizes 4. Low salaries 5. Lunch & prep times are too short 6. Better opportunities elsewhere 7. Student behaviors with inadequate consequences MUST DO BETTER! #EdChat

Also called the Wedjat or Udjat, this ancient Egyptian symbol blends mythology, protection, healing, mathematics, and spiritual belief into a single image. One of the most fascinating aspects: the Eye was used as a fraction system. Each part of the eye represented a fraction:

@teachthemx3 I let kids "explore" - I have an explore board of options and kids can add negotiated items to it. Kids can write, or draw, or code, or learn the periodic table, or watch Kurzgesagt videos, or the James Webb telescope, or Google Arts & Culture or Google Earth, crochet, TinkerCad,

No, the answer is not more busy work. Unfortunately, it is a very popular method schools justify as a way to prevent behavior problems that arise due to boredom.
LucWarmWater@kowwachobani

@teachthemx3 Yes and I have to decide do I make more work and give the “fast kids” extra work to keep them busy even if they do double or triple the work of other students or am I teaching them that they get punished with more work for finishing early?

Enheduanna speaks as herself, not just as a messenger of the goddess. She signs her words — one of the first known authors in history to do so.

Enheduanna is often considered the world’s first named author (2285–2250 BCE), High priestess of the moon god Nanna. She held both political and religious authority in ancient Mesopotamia. She helped standardize Sumerian religious literature

@MrDanielBuck The problem in elementary is the number of complex needs. If there are no behaviours or intense learning needs, maybe. But when you have multiple kids with severe behaviours, and kids who can't read and write in older grades, they need 1-1 support, but are in classes of 30.

Hear me out: I’m convinced that INCREASING class sizes would actually improve education Why? How? Simple: Teacher quality is the single most important in-school factor Consider something radical: Double class sizes and you could cut the worst 50 percent of teachers Think “can hardly do middle school academics themselves” kind of teachers That also would allow SIGNIFICANTLY higher wages, drawing much higher quality candidates If schools actually have the stones to enforce discipline, there’s no reason a larger class would be more raucous. College lecture halls have hundreds of quiet students after all Only people this would really piss off are unions and low quality teachers. Well I say “stay mad” and improve schools regardless

In curved spacetime, the straightest possible path is often curved. That path is called a geodesic. So: A planet orbiting the Sun is not being pulled, it’s moving straight ahead — but spacetime itself is curved, so the path looks like an orbit - no force needed.

Matter tells spacetime how to curve. Spacetime tells matter how to move.

I've always wanted to empower kids. Let's create a generation of empathetic, empowered, and socially responsible adults. They are too disengaged right now

I have not done this, it's just an idea I get when kids seem checked out. I think being involved in the greater good would be empowering.

@TheRealJamieKay Teachers lean left because kids don’t choose their parents. When you work with that reality every day, it’s hard to believe their outcomes should rest solely on “personal responsibility” instead of shared responsibility.
