"The chaotic scene in Washington was familiar to American history." @AdamSerwer writes on the lessons of the violent 1898 insurrection in Wilmington and the history of opposition to multiracial democracy that informs current events. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

Reflections on Jan.6 attempted white nationalist coup: We must guard against false symmetries here. This was an orchestrated riot in defense of a reigning and waning tyrant & white supremacist. It is in no way akin 2 protests demanding justice and resisting racism and oppression.

Also, it’s ok if students need to take more time to process before they are ready/able to engage and discuss when you invite them to. Yesterday was traumatic and we all heal at our own pace, in our own way.

A3: Allow Ss to bring their passions into their learning and to develop evidence that speaks of them as a learner. There is no one-size-fits-all in education and so one learning outcome can never truly measure all. #formativechat

A1: Giving open ended questions that allow students to answer in a variety of ways so that they can utilize their strengths is a great way to create opportunity to show skills for students that struggle with traditional ways. #formativechat #UNILited

@BrianDunleavy16 Every student should have access to timely, meaningful formative feedback. It's a key equity issue in schools. Building a strong formative feedback loop builds student confidence + self-efficacy, making them more likely to engage in deep learning. #FormativeChat

R1: Developing critical thinking skills and problem solving in our a students is essential. To do this, we should seek to offer richer lessons and encourage deeper exploration. I think role-playing exercises can be a great way to teach critical thinking #formativechat

@Rdene915 At this point I am working to utilize Google Classroom more creatively. The question function is great because my students can easily access a "forum" on their tablets. I am looking forward to dipping my toes in other platforms as well!

A1: As an ELA student teacher, I am working to do this by offering students opportunities to communicate their thinking in a variety of ways-- written, oral, performative, artistic, etc. and offering choice #formativechat

Q1: If we truly value critical thinking, creative problem solving, communication, and collaboration, we should be teaching and assessing those outcomes. How are you creating opportunities to develop these skills in students? #formativeChat #LEAPeffect

@S_behls I teach them to use #MLA in my middle school classroom, but remind them that #APA will be required for other classes. I highlight the ways the formats are different!

Ss have started presenting final projects for Night today-- all about personal identity and how it connects to Elie's in the book. Seeing them share their hard work and open up to each other about their own lives and experiences really has me in my feelings.

We talk a lot about teacher self care is it pertains to balance and making sure we are honoring our whole selves out of the classroom-- this is critical. But today I'm practicing mindfulness of my identity IN the classroom. My students are amazing and with them is my happy place.
