On this day in 1965, Hollywood starlet Dorothy Dandridge died. She was 42. Dorothy Dandridge was a trailblazing black actress and singer. She rose to prominence in the 1950s as one of the first black actresses to achieve mainstream success in Hollywood. Dandridge's talent and beauty captivated audiences, and she became a symbol of elegance and grace. She starred in notable films such as "Carmen Jones," for which she earned an Academy Award nomination, and "Porgy and Bess." Dandridge faced racial discrimination and limited opportunities in the film industry but left a lasting impact on the entertainment world. Her legacy as a talented performer and barrier-breaking artist continues to inspire generations.

Thinking about the family of Rep. Melissa Hortman & her husband who were assassinated at the hands of a radical MAGA shooter in June. Melissa was doing such important work for the state of Minnesota & this country-we still grieve her loss & demand strict gun reform legislation.

NEW: Schools across the country are requiring students to lock their phones in a phone pouch for the entire school day, can unlock the pouch at the end of the day. Teachers and principals say phones in the classroom are becoming too much of a distraction. “The last couple years, we left it up to the teachers to kind of govern their classrooms,” said Danville High School Principal Jacob Bretz. “We were just running into the constant battle that temptation of that phone being accessible in the pocket, wondering do I have a message, feeling the notifications go off and the urge to check them.” Students are required to put all cellphones, ear buds and smart watches in the magnetically locked pouches at the start of the school day. At the end of the school day, the students are allowed to unlock the pouch. Good!

In 1959, Marjorie James became the first Black teacher in Radnor Township, PA. At 88, she returned to the halls where she broke barriers and shaped lives. Her presence showed generations of Black students what was possible. “Diversity in education matters — because that’s life.”
