Cuz they aren't giving these books sharp edits. They don't give books that weren't already published sharp edits most of the time. You think they're giving books already selling like hotcakes multiple passes? They saw it trended and bought it.

@amykdebellis @neon_heartbeat A question though, if this went through a publishing house, how did they make this pass through their processes and hit the shelves with it being so terrible (I'm listening to a YT take down on this novel youtube.com/watch?v=GbeKTa…)

Look what I found at Haiti Cultural Exchange today. A book centering the boom of Haitian artists. Haiti didn’t have an arts facility until 1944, thanks to American watercolorist DeWitt Peters and local artists like Hector Hyppolite. It helped birth the Haitian Arts Movement.

@mamiwatta4ever I'm talking about self pub aka the people in charge of their own covers.

@MsWOCReader Just be careful w this one! Many bigger traditional publishing houses do NOT give authors that much say over covers. And like in any business, new writers may not have the same ability to advocate for themselves as those w more experience

I keep saying if folks are using AI for the cover I'm gonna assume they used it for the inside of the book too. 🤷🏿‍♀️

Again if you're using AI for the cover I will be making a fair assumption you don't know how to weave words together.

In the Reddit post about Shy Girl, the phrase "quiet violence" is argued to be a ChatGPT signature. Ngl this reads like something I would write. I'm glad Shy Girl was pulled (the author admitted that AI was used for editing) but I worry about LLMs' impact on style and voice.

@_JackPBrown And right now on Threads there's another discourse because people immediately jumped on buying an AI journal for Black women from a known scammer.

@MsWOCReader 🫤🫤🫤 I was aware of the editor thing but not all of that. So there should have been enough controversy beforehand to give Hachette pause.

@_JackPBrown I personally don't trust some of these author AI covered self pubbed books getting trad deals either.

@_JackPBrown However that author it wasn't just what she wrote that got the AI accusations. She admitted to stealing covers before and using AI on a self pubbed book. Then she blamed an editor who allegedly rewrote the book.

@MsWOCReader I hope not, because cherry picking isolated phrases and labelling them "AI" will only villainize the wrong people, esp when it could simply be clunky or clichéd writing as you've rightly said. It's disappointing that with all its resources, Hatchette didn't spot it themselves.

@_JackPBrown A lot of the phrases I see people accusing of being AI writing are cliched phrasing that I see all the time in books. So I'm not sure if it will stop people from exploring the boundaries of written language.

Writers are already pulling away from using em-dashes to avoid ChatGPT accusations. More writers will avoid exploring the boundaries of written English if it means many people will acuse them of using AI. Because once that rumour starts, the suspicions will always linger.
