A week has passed, and what seemed likely is now patently obvious. There is zero evidence that anyone from Duke’s basketball program was “punched in the face” at the Smith Center last week. Nor is there any evidence that a staffer was “trampled on the floor” or “in a complete brawl”, for that matter. Some have asked why I’m talking about this. It’s certainly not because of a sports rivalry. That’s no business of the DA’s Office. But I’ve seen firsthand how reckless accusations of violence incite more violence, and that is my business. Someone with the power and influence of a major men’s basketball coach should exercise more discretion before just saying things that can have real-world consequences.

@RobertBurns82 Mayor - Please get the facts correct. The case was not dismissed. The only item dismissed was the enhancement to the charges. What remains are the charges of felony assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating or interfering with federal officers. Which are serious.

In Charlotte, we just witnessed a man who used his vehicle as a weapon, interfered with CBP, and then evaded law enforcement have his case dismissed. North Carolinians deserve to know: Would this same outcome have been given to a conservative? We watched for years as Roy Cooper’s administration targeted conservatives, small business owners, and even pastors during COVID while turning a blind eye to real threats in our communities. That double standard erodes trust and puts families at risk. It’s time to restore equal justice, remove corrupt actors from the bench, and hold our judiciary accountable to the people not to political agendas.
