Do patterns really exist? We see things like the orbit of the moon around the Earth, for instance. It seems to repeat its 29 and a half day journey around the Earth, and seems to do so the same each time. But you know and I know it isn't the same each time. Every time it's a little different. If we sped up time, we'd see that it's not a perfect pattern at all, but just the path the Moon takes naturally on its collision course with Earth. What we see in daily life isn't regularity, but rather we are witnessing something change very slowly. It appears to us as patterns and cycles because it is useful to do that, but it actually isn't patterns and cycles. I mean, it kind of is, in that it undeniably has some rigid structure that guides its behavior. When you say "God" above, part of me feels like what you really mean by that is "the source of human consciousness". "Because the source of human consciousness speaks in patterns." you might have said... I agree with that broader statement. I think while patterns don't really exist, there is a sort of rhythm to nature to which organisms have tuned in. While the Moon never orbits the Earth in exactly the same amount of time it had previously, like down to the femtosecond or whatever, even in billions of years, the Moon obviously does orbit it over about the same amount of time. Consciousness, being a feature of organisms, allows them to utilize this approximate regularity via awareness. Organisms are good at this because they are hyper-regular things. Your heartbeat never beats the same twice, never sends blood in exactly the same way twice, but has flexed approximately the same way for your entire life so far. Over and over and over again--successive, similar activity. All of life is like this. I think we have a natural inclination to abstracting nature's activity into patterns. It allows us to turn the VAST INTERCONNECTED EVERYTHING in front of us into little, pliable nuggets. This is a PHONE. This is a KEYBOARD. I am in a HOUSE. These objects are (again, approximate) patterns of activity, just like a heartbeat or the Moon. A phone looks like it's a stable thing but it isn't. As we all know, it'll eventually fall apart simply due to the forces of nature abhoring such stability. This is one of the core reasons I'd assert there's no such thing as a perfect, stable pattern. Everything becomes something else, and a pattern is something that stays what it is.

@MurderSwan That’s a result of having pattern recognition, not the why. But yes.

It is only a download insofar as the source is necessarily elsewhere. It's almost as if there isn't even really a "self" to "store" the thought, and more like it's a pattern occuring in your brain that you can be aware of. Of course, the pattern started long ago. Very, very long ago. Is a download a download if nobody clicked 'download'? Or is it more like the program that's running already had a file in it, and we simply discover the file?

@tendollardanny Um shut up I have been rejected enough times by human people that I'm firmly in the 'making sure my beliefs about morality, society, and religion make sufficient sense' camp, and in addition I can proudly report that my beliefs still make absolutely no sense.

Emotional intelligence at its finest. He called me a commie, then blocked me so I couldn’t reply. IQ and EQ are connected. If you need curse words, the R-word, or the block button to make your point, you’re struggling. You probably just need a hug. Maybe everyone should check in on @rickydigital and ask if he’s doing okay

I used to be kind of like that, but it was an unsatisfactory place to land as far as answering the question is concerned. I actually want to answer the question. I don't care about this tribe or that tribe. I never made any friends speaking my mind and I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. I still seek the answer, even after all these years. You can tell when someone's parrotting after a while.
