Kiribati Rere; a carefully crafted knife or short sword featuring a blade embellished with two symmetrical rows of meticulously arranged shark teeth. Some rere, like this one, may be curved. Each shark tooth is delicately perforated and affixed within a channel along the blade’s edge, secured by a finely woven plaited cord, augmenting the weapon’s visual allure. Within the historical context of Kiribati, a diverse array of hand weapons, including those with shark-tooth blades, occupies a prominent position in the indigenous armoury. These swords embody a rich martial tradition, often complementing full suits of resilient coconut fibre armour and helmets crafted from porcupine fish. Over time, these distinctive blades have transcended their functional role to become sought-after tourist commodities, a practice spanning nearly a century within Kiribati. Primarily hewn from coconut palm wood and bound with a fusion of coconut fibres and hair, museum exhibits frequently feature these objects. Johann Dietrich Suhling, a German auctioneer living in Australia, likely acquired the rere as a tourist souvenir around or slightly preceding 1890. Historical documentation retrieved from the Australian newspaper Adelaide Observer (16 August 1890 AD) illuminates the occurrence of a significant event known as “The North-West German Trade and Industrial Exhibition,” held in Bremen from 1 June to 30 September. According to the newspaper’s accounts, J.D. Suhling meticulously assembled various items, encompassing commercial commodities, agricultural produce, mineral ores, fauna, avifauna, and indigenous weaponry, to represent the Australian contingent at the exhibition. The Suhling’s inclusion of artefacts procured from New Zealand, such as ornamental objects and weapons, within the exhibition’s showcase. The resounding success and widespread acclaim garnered by the exhibition led to an extension of its duration beyond initial 1890 AD, timeframe, culminating in establishing a permanent museum in Bremen dedicated to housing the amassed collections. It is plausible that the Kiribati rere here was part of Suhling’s curated assemblage exhibited at this event.
