@MustacheVickers I look at it as building lines to compete. How you get there is above my pay grade. But you can’t tell me a team that has: 94-93-13 Tkachuck-8-Tuch 50-42-24 84-4C-49/73 Can’t compete for a finals trip in the east.

@2G1CRangers There's no foolproof strategy to building a Cup winner. Most teams will fail over time no matter what they do. You have to play the odds, be patient and get lucky. But I'd bet the least successful strategy is to build around expensive players close-to-or-in their 30s.

@2G1CRangers Odds are it only gets worse from here for him: ups and downs around a downward sloping line. His career could fall off a cliff For now he's fine as a role player on a contending team looking to add punch and grit, e.g., the Olympic team The Rangers need to get younger and cheaper

@92In82 I agree with this. I was talking to someone yesterday about the positional order-of-importance. All things being equal, I put Center as 1st. Maybe Left Wing last. Not sure how to rank 2nd-4th, but maybe all situation D-man is 2nd.

Whitney Houston’s Super Bowl 25 performance was the most overrated national anthem of all time.

@92In82 The Isles also got old and had put in an enormous number of playoff games over a 10-year period. They went three or four rounds deep almost every year.

Smith was never the most important player on any of those teams. They went as Bossy did. Once his back went, so did the Islanders. You keep talking about cups as if they’re not team achievements. That’s like saying Osgood is better than Lundqvist. Smith won the Vezina in the last year before it became a voted-on award. The overrating of Smith is absurd.

I’ll have to do my top-100 one day, but some things I noticed… - Hasek being the top goalie is 🤌🏻 - Bossy ahead of LaFleur is iffy - Robitaille ahead of Kane is a yikes for me - Salming and Hawerchuk are too high up - Duncan Keith is too low - Shea Weber on here but no Phil Housley? - Billy Smith might not make my top-100

NHL’s Top Players.. How do you feel about the top 10 here..? *Note: these are post-1967 in case you’re wondering why Gordie Howe and others aren’t listed.

@92In82 Like I said, this isn’t about the regular season. Smith cranked up several notches come playoff time. Notably, as soon as the Isles turned to Smith full time and made Resch the backup they went on their run. Not to diminish Chico - he was terrific. But not Smith.

@MustacheVickers Smith literally had one other top-5 finish outside of his Vezina year. He only received Vezina votes in ONE OTHER season aside from that.

@92In82 I agree that Cups are team achievements. When a team wins 19 straight playoff series a lot has to go right and not much can go wrong. A goalie can’t win 19 straight on his own but If it’s the same goalie over that stretch it tells you something about him.

@92In82 Understood. Back then 75% of the teams made the playoffs. The regular season was not as important as it is now. Smith’s career is all about the playoffs. Moog played the last few games of the ‘84 Finals against the Isles for the Oilers first Cup win (Fuhr injury)

Ranford won A (singular) cup and won a Conn Smythe because he went on the run of a life but Messier should’ve won the Smythe in 90 as they don’t get past Chicago without his heroics in the middle of that series. Smith had 2 very good regular seasons. He’s in the HOF because of the cups. Fuhr and Vernon had better regular season numbers.

@92In82 No way were Fuhr and Vernon better. Not even close between Smith and Vernon. As for top-3 most important the same could be said for Fuhr and Vernon. Other goalies won Cups for that Oilers team.

@MustacheVickers Fuhr was absolutely better. Vernon was a better regular season goalie AND won a Conn Smythe and two cups. Smith was never a top-3 most important player on his team, Bossy, Potvin and Trottier.

@92In82 Beezer had his moments but no way was he in Billy Smith’s class. Beezer had major playoff flops, notably ‘92. Curtis Joseph had like two playoff runs. Smith is the goalie of the team that won 19 playoff series in a row. Yes, great team, but that tells you something

@92In82 Most of those goalies were from different eras. No way were Fuhr and Vernon better. Not even close with Vernon. Tony Esposito reg season - yes; playoffs - no. Trying to compare goalies from the Dead Puck Era and afterwards to goalies from the ‘80s and earlier is tough

@92In82 Smith played a long time and had a second life after they chose him over Chico Resch for the '80 playoffs. If you're taking the '70s, then there are more candidates, like Dryden and Parent. But if you're taking the '80s, then I'm not so sure.
