I attended a public dialogue in Garoowe hosted by @thirdhouse_III on “State-Building in Post-Conflict Societies,” featuring @AhmedAwadSO. Scholars, students, and leaders discussed governance challenges, institutional capacity, and leadership in #Somalia’s state-building journey.

No proof Al-Shabaab is breaking from Al-Qaeda. On-ground indicators, messaging, and ops still show full alignment. Claims of a split are not backed by facts or field evidence. #Somalia
Abdurahman Sheikh Azhari@HOA_ANALYST

#SecurityAlert Al-Shabaab is reportedly considering leaving Al-Qaeda. Growing reports indicate that Al-Shabaab’s senior leadership has become convinced of the need to withdraw from its alliance with Al-Qaeda and revise its ideological position regarding global jihad. Two individuals considered to be among the closest associates of leader Ahmed Diriye reportedly made secret trips to undisclosed countries in January and April of this year, where they presented recommendations aimed at changing the group’s current direction. Events that have taken place in Afghanistan and Syria in recent years have significantly influenced both the leadership and members of Al-Shabaab. @Wargelinn Analytica is expected to soon publish a report concerning meetings held by Al-Shabaab’s leadership, committees allegedly established to examine a withdrawal from Al-Qaeda, and communication channels related to possible talks with the Somali government and other parties. #AlShabaab #AlQaeda #Somalia #Syria #Afghanistan #Taliban #Counterterrorism #Security #Hornofafrica #AQAPYEMEN

I'll believe it when I see it, Shabaab is very vocal about how AQ it is. But also keep in mind, when it originally pledged allegiance to Bin Laden around 2008 (the 2012 pledge to Zawahiri was just the public one) it was told to keep the AQ bay'ah a secret and downplay the links.

Somalia has been "closely monitored" since 1992. It has been "urged toward dialogue" through every collapse, every coup, every crisis. If monitoring and urging were governance, Somalia would be Switzerland by now. Try something different @UNTMIS_ @hodansomali @MPMursalKhaliif

UN spokesperson says the Secretary-General is closely monitoring Somalia’s political situation and welcomes preparations by the Federal Government and the Somalia Future Council for talks on elections, urging all sides to continue dialogue toward an agreement.

#UPDATE: Outgoing Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, whose mandate is disputed by opposition groups, met EU Ambassador to Somalia Francesca Di Mauro after internationally backed talks collapsed, with the president reportedly refusing to soften his position on unilateral one-person, one-vote elections. The meeting also comes days after the EU approved new funding for AUSSOM operations in Somalia.

My two cents: I have been covering Somali politics and security for 35 years now. Whenever Somalia has political crises and difficulties, most of its elites tend to blame foreigners for the majority of the shortcomings - from Boutros Boutros-Ghali and Egypt, to Ethiopia and Meles Zenawi, Italy and Bettino Craxi, Mohamed Sahnoun, Mahiga, Turkey, and the UAE. I’m not saying all foreigners are blameless, but Somalis should also look at themselves in the mirror. Somalis are front and center in their own challenges, and only they can overcome them. Some helpful actors were maligned and eventually forced to completely abandon Somalia. We are seeing it happen all over again, time and again, over the years. We know who they are. If you don’t know, read the history. You can’t stop foreigners from pursuing their own national interests - that is not in your hands. But you can solve your own problems, because that is in your hands!

Somali youth are the most romanticized and the most instrumentalized constituency in Somali politics. We are invoked constantly in speeches, in donor frameworks, in party platforms. We are rarely consulted. #15May #SomaliYouthDay #Somalia

15th May has now arrived and the government’s mandate, according to the old constitution, has ended. Two days of talks have yielded no breakthrough. Analysts and officials I’ve spoken to describe the moment as unprecedented. A nation’s fate hangs in the lurch.

A coordinated Turkish media & influence network increasingly appears aligned with HSM’s political project, including support for disputed elections & unilateral constitutional changes. External actors should support Somali consensus & legality, not deepen political polarization.

#Somalia's Federal Government stated that it is not building houses for ‘the people evicted from lands in #Mogadishu’, as said by the Director-General of the Ministry of Public Works, Farhan Abdinur: “We did not say that we are giving houses to the people whose homes were demolished. That task is not our responsibility. We are carrying out resettlement for Somali displaced persons, who number around four million.”.

@Mohamed_Dubo 2 million housing units needed. 3.5 million refugees and IDPs. And the government’s response to the housing crisis is evicting people from the homes they already have!

A milestone would be a free and fair election This is a managed installation with ballot boxes. The candidate was finalised at Villa Somalia. The acting president is a federal cabinet member. The process was controlled from start to finish. #Somalia

Milestone in Somalia’s history: Direct voting is taking place for the first time in the country in 57 years today. People vote in the Southwest State of Somalia, making history. Somalia has had an indirect, tribal voting system for years until now.
