PhD dissertations are somewhat forgotten as a source for studying church history. Here’s one from a Franciscan priest arguing that Augustine’s view of Eucharistic sacrifice differs from that of Trent

“Let us proceed now to shew what the opinion of our Divines is: in the setting forth of which, in the first place, observe, that although our Divines now abstain from the use of the word merit, which the Fathers frequently employ; yet they do it, not because their sentiments differ from those of the Fathers, but lest they should be assenting to Papists, who seize upon that term; and though all antiquity cry out against them, forcibly distort it to a meaning both pernicious and heretical. For what the Fathers understood under the term merit, namely, the work of a believer and regenerate person, endued with supernatural goodness, pleasing and acceptable to God in a supernatural order, and destined to receive the gracious rewards, as well of this life as of that which is to come, from the promise of a God most bountiful; this, all our Divines have always entirely conceded: as has been shown, when treating professedly of the works really good. We are not, then, opposing the mere term merit,” — John Davenant, Treatise on Justification, vol. 2, pg. 75-76

Great families build great nations, which is why history's greatest families and dynasties are worth studying. As Rhodesian PM Ian Douglas Smith noted of great families as the bedrock of civilized life: “It is worth repeating: great nations are built on the foundation of great families. There was also the advantage of being part of a small rural community, where people were interested in one another, and prepared to lend each other a helping hand. That communal spirit, turning out to support your local team, making your contribution to the social life of the community, is the bedrock of civilised life.”

An interesting clash of cultures in this must-watch YouTube documentary 'Empire of Dust'. After five years living and working across Southern Africa and several conflict zones in Sub-Saharan Africa, I can say the film captures an uncomfortable but observable reality: much of the region struggles not only to build modern infrastructure and institutions, but to maintain them. Roads, power systems, and basic services often fall into visible decay. It's far from universal - some countries fare better - but the pattern is difficult to ignore. My wife, who until recently managed operations for a French multinational across 31 African countries (including North Africa), saw even more of the continent than I did. Travelling between oil, gas, and industrial projects while dealing with governments and local businesses, she often remarked with a mix of insight and wry humour: "31 cultures, 31 different excuses." That said, the entrepreneurial energy is real and thriving in several places. Kenya's killing it with mobile money like M-Pesa, Nigeria's famous for that nonstop hustle and leads in women starting businesses, Rwanda has totally reinvented itself, and you've got solid business scenes in Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire. Africa actually tops the world in people wanting to start ventures - thanks to a super young population -but most of those businesses stay small and scrappy because of shaky infrastructure, institutional mistrust, and weak credit access. After independence, a bunch of African governments straight-up sabotaged their own futures. Socialist schemes, nationalising everything, corruption, tribal politics, and anti-market attitudes wrecked a lot of what was there. Think Tanzania's failed village collectives or Zimbabwe's land grabs. Too many leaders cared more about holding power than actually running things well, and the result was decades of decline. The Chinese have built real stuff - highways, ports, power plants - but it's come with baggage. Heavy debt, shady loans, environmental messes, bringing in their own workers, and lopsided deals that mostly ship out raw resources. Places like Zambia have felt those scars. The gains are visible, but the long-term benefits for locals often fall far short of what they promised. Ultimately, governance, institutions, and local culture explain far more of Africa's outcomes than any external actor or a contentious colonial legacy. Pockets of real progress prove that where these align, advancement is possible and gives hope for the future.

If actual science converts on an actual scientific basis for evolution, I'll say, "cool." But it hasn't. And the body of science to date argues heavily against it. (I'll bet you didn't know that!) So, just spitballing here, what if "evolution" was always part of an active measure to create an initially plausible competing cultural-level metaphysic to that of the Judeo-Christian? And that in every way, it can be shown to parallel the Hermetic, the alchemical, the Neoplatonic, and Platonic world view that is organically immanent in orientation that seeks the reformed Prisca at the end of time, or, as Hegel put it, that seeks Absolute Act at the end of History (that moves forward)? The parallels are a perfect match. And this could have been measured in 300 BC. BTW, and not for nothing, the term evolution can be traced back to Neoplatonic origins in both Greek and Latin and relates to the unrolling of a scroll or turning of a page.

Named after Henry Bartle Frere, who negotiated the Frere treaty between Britain and the Sultanate of Zanzibar in 1873. It formally prohibited all import of slaves to the Sultanate of Zanzibar and forced the closure of the slave market in Zanzibar Stone Town. It also made it possible for the British to stop all slave ships in the Indian Ocean

Freretown in Mombasa was a place established by missionaries where slaves who had been freed by British patrols or escaped their Arab masters would run to. They came from as far as present-day Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Congo, and of course Kenya Uganda and Tanzania. As such, the non-tribal identity and its inhabitants, the descendants of freed slaves, they are often referred to as "Freretowners"

Hamas Commanders: “Our fight is not only about Palestine. Our mission is to kill every non-Muslim on earth. We will hunt down Jews and Christians wherever they are in the world. They will either convert to Islam - or WE WILL KILL THEM.” In NYC, fellow Islamofacists chant, “We are Hamas,” while their sympathizers justify this as “resistance.”
