Nora Owen and Frances Fitzgerald are directly responsible for the provision that rewards asylum seekers anonymity. If you’re wondering why a murder suspect can be the subject of a nationwide manhunt while their name and identity are withheld by much of the Irish media, this provision is the reason. The legislation was introduced and maintained by Fine Gael-led governments.

This is a pet hate of mine. Why do the Gardai and and others refer to all and any SUVs as a "Jeep"? A Hyundai Santa Fe is not a JEEP! All denim jeans are not Levis and all smart phones are not I-phones. Rant over.

Keep in mind that these foreign buyers were able to obtain their mortgages because the government created a scheme which they availed of. They then were able to buy up large amounts of Irish housing stock during a housing crisis that uniquely impacts young Irish people. This scheme was marketed as an aid to young Irish people but actually was nothing of the sort. It was inflationary on the price of housing and facilitated MORE of that housing stock going to foreigners. Those foreign buyers now own those houses. They are established and building their lives with the help of our society and government. The money they got from this scheme will supposedly be paid back but that opportunity to buy a home was granted and still stands so that hardly matters.

@TJ_FactCheck Half the article is a “well achktually Cueta isn’t part of Spain geographically speaking” in attempt to undermine Michael McCarthy while ignoring that RTE initially reported it as merely a few hundred people entering an “enclave”.

Conflicting false statements, largely pushed by far-right activists, have exaggerated narratives about the Spanish government’s response to the migrant crisis in Ceuta. jrnl.ie/7118858

The images coming from Ceuta are unacceptable. We cannot allow anyone to come to our Union without abiding by our rules. Dangerous crossings must stop immediately. Smuggling networks must be dismantled. And returns must be swift, as our rules allow. I tasked two Commissioners to support to control the situation. @magnusbrunner is already working closely with Spain and is ready to travel to critical points. He will work on additional operational support to Spain, including through Frontex. @dubravkasuica is in contact with her Moroccan counterpart. I am confident that our close partnership with Morocco will help deliver concrete results.

Reading the Irish media, you'd never know Spain was just invaded or Italy's Prime Minister has called for Spain's exit from Shengen. If you thought it was newsworthy you were wrong.

Spain will be forced to hand over Ceuta to Morocco. The remaining citizens of Spain won't stay in Ceuta and are likely already fleeing. That is the reason this is happening. Ceuta and Melilla have been in dispute for centuries. Morocco is recapturing land they consider theirs.
