WATCHING CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S ‘BRONZE AGE IS COLLAPSING’ (2026) AKA ‘THE ODYSSEY’ (2026) WITH A BLACK WOMAN Was in a certain tropical city and mentioned off-hand to a black woman I knew there that I was going to see Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ (2026) “Oh yeah I want to see that movie” Was polite to invite her Asked her if she knew much about the original poem, or about Greek Mythology or Ancient Greece in general. She said she didn’t. I didn’t want to dwell on this, it would a bit gratuitous to, but suffice it to say she was ‘going into the film’ not really knowing anything. As in, she recognised ‘The Wooden Horse’ but that was basically it, she wasn’t watching it knowing who any of ‘The Characters’ were. And there are a lot of ‘Characters’ in ‘The Odyssey’ too - you’re an educated reader you know them all already but imagine if you didn’t really know who even Helen or Achilles were so it didn’t bother you that they were being depicted by Lupita N’yongo or Ellen Page (as ‘Sidon’). You know, because there are a lot of names in this; Menelaus and Agamemnon and Calypso and Clytemnestra and Polyphemus and others that get Marvel Movie-style name-dropped as Easter Eggs for ‘Ancient Greece’ fans like Ajax or Orestes or… Achilles. Not including ‘Cut Characters’ like Nestor or Nausicaa. You would have to have heard of most of these figures before to keep up. I’m not saying “Bravo Nolan you pitched it perfectly for the relatively educated black woman demographic who don’t know much about the Western Canon, that’s what we want more of that please” but if that was hypothetically his intent he succeeded in it I think with something like ‘The Odyssey’, whenever you ‘adapt’ that you’re going to annoy a lot of people whatever you do, you’re going to get people writing very angry social media posts about the importance of ‘nostos’ or ‘xenia’ or ‘metis’ or ‘kleos’, about how actually the Phaeacians recognise Odysseus as a natural aristocrat from his body alone when he washes up on their island, about how you got the armour wrong, about how you didn’t depict any of that properly. ‘The Odyssey’ doesn’t really do any of that ‘properly’ of course, sometimes it does but often it doesn’t, its morality is far more (post-)Christian. Among other themes it’s eg about Matt Damon’s PTSD, about him realising that “It’s me… I was the Sea People all along”. About how he is responsible for… the Bronze Age Collapse because of his own personal misconduct. If you take it at level it mostly works So I think watch it instead as Christopher Nolan’s ‘Bronze Age Is Collapsing’ (2026) and you’ll enjoy it more. Matt Damon does actually say “our age of bronze… is collapsing” at one point, this isn’t a made-up line. There were about 15 people in the cinema and I was the only one who laughed out loud at this. Caught me off guard, was very goofy. Actually enjoyed the film for its goofiness in this kind of way. The weird constant references to the Sea People were one of my favourite bits. Why did Nolan include this? Why did he add this bonus outside threat of ‘Bronze Age Collapse’ to the plot? Did he watch a YouTube video once and want to include them in the movie because he thought it seemed cool? Whatever the reason it works as goofy entertainment - especially if you watched the same YouTube video he did so ‘get the reference’ That’s what I mean though, that’s why a better title for the film would be ‘Bronze Age Is Collapsing’. The best parts for me were the set-pieces with Matt Damon and his crew, where they encounter Polyphemus or Circe or Syclla and Charbydis etc. These are fun and work well with the usual Nolan-istic motifs. Maybe you don’t think ‘it works if you watch it semi-knowingly’ is a good enough reason to go and see it, fair enough. Nolan at least knows how to ‘do a blockbuster’ and as ‘blockbusters’ go ‘Bronze Age Is Collapsing’ is ‘Basically Fine’, even if it is not Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ Woman said she enjoyed it afterwards - so there you go
