Exercise becomes therapy when it takes you beyond simple physical movement and pulls you into a flow state. That is where the body stops feeling separate from the mind. Breathing, movement, rhythm, resistance, focus, pain, discipline, and intention begin to merge into one single field of awareness. Steven Kotler explains in The Rise of Superman that flow states are not just moments of peak performance. They are altered states of consciousness where fear becomes quieter, time perception changes, the inner critic disappears, and the human system begins operating with a higher level of coherence. This is also where alpha and theta brainwave states become important. When the nervous system enters deeper states of focus, relaxation, and presence, the brain can begin shifting away from ordinary stress-driven beta activity and into alpha and theta patterns. Alpha is often associated with calm alertness, relaxed focus, and mental clarity. Theta is often linked to deeper intuition, inner imagery, emotional processing, subconscious access, and states of healing awareness. That is why exercise can become more than training. When done in a healthy way, flow can become a doorway into repair, renewal, and even rejuvenation. Not because movement is magic, but because the body, brain, nervous system, fascia, breath, and consciousness begin to communicate with less resistance. The body starts remembering how to regulate itself. One of the first people who instructed me to understand this from a medical and athletic perspective was Dr. David T. Neuman, one of my mentors in sports medicine and movement. Dr. Neuman is an orthopedic surgeon fellowship-trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy, with more than 17 years of experience in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine injuries. His approach has also emphasized preventive orthopedics, proper exercise, hydration, rest, nutrition, weight-consciousness, balance, coordination, and the importance of using movement not only to treat pain, but to prevent recurrence and preserve long-term joint and skeletal health. That perspective helped me understand that real training is not only about performance. It is about structural intelligence, prevention, regulation, and longevity. (NY Sportscare) Jacobo Grinberg described consciousness as something capable of interacting with a deeper informational field, what he called the lattice. From that perspective, when the mind becomes still, focused, and coherent, it becomes easier to perceive reality beyond the ordinary noise of thought. And the body is not separate from that process. This is why fascia matters. Fascia is not just connective tissue holding the body together. It is part of the living architecture through which tension, trauma, posture, movement, hydration, emotion, and awareness are expressed. When your fascia is restricted, your body often feels disconnected, rigid, and less adaptable. When you work it consciously through mobility, control, breath, and movement, the body becomes more fluid, more integrated, and more connected to its environment. That is where Contrology, what Joseph Pilates originally taught, becomes powerful. Contrology is not simply exercise. It is the art of bringing the body under conscious control through precision, breath, alignment, concentration, and flow. It trains the fascia, posture, nervous system, and awareness to work together instead of moving mechanically and unconsciously. Then there is frontal displacement movement, like running or walking forward with intention. Moving forward physically also trains the mind to move forward psychologically. Running activates discipline, rhythm, breath, endurance, and the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain associated with planning, emotional regulation, decision-making, impulse control, and executive function. That is why running can feel like mental cleansing. You are not only moving your legs. You are training your brain to organize chaos, process emotion, and keep advancing. Strength training adds another layer. Lifting weight teaches the body how to meet resistance. It builds structure, confidence, hormonal resilience, and grit. There are moments in life where softness, breath, and surrender are necessary. But there are also moments where you need force, stability, courage, and the ability to push through resistance without breaking. That is why a complete therapeutic movement practice should include multiple dimensions working as one system. Running or forward movement trains direction, endurance, rhythm, emotional regulation, and the prefrontal cortex. Contrology, mobility, and fascia work restore connection, fluidity, posture, breath, and inner awareness. Strength training builds grit, resilience, structure, and the capacity to advance when life becomes heavy. The Monroe Institute studied expanded states of consciousness through brainwave patterns, altered perception, and non-ordinary awareness. Their work points toward something many spiritual traditions already understood: consciousness is not fixed. It can be trained, expanded, focused, and refined. And spiritually, Jesus described the highest form of inner alignment as connection with the Holy Spirit. A state where the person is no longer moved only by fear, ego, impulse, or survival, but by guidance, renewal, strength, truth, and divine intelligence from within. So when exercise brings you into flow, it becomes more than movement.

@adamtaggart Short term pain and long term gain, or vice-versa? Pain is a defense mechanism. 10 miles is outside your body’s range? What are some of your long term bodily goals? You have one body and I think you desire to keep it functioning at a high level for a long time.

10 mile run, done & dusted Gotta be honest: it wasn’t pretty. Hips barked at me the last few miles. But kept thinking of the US pilot who just survived & thought it would be disrespectful of him to wuss out

@adamtaggart I still see some joint space in that x-ray. Not sure of your age, but a good arthroscopic surgeon specializing in shoulder/sports could clean this joint up pretty well and give you more time (and function) with your own tissue. I also am not sure of the integrity of your cuff…

Well, got the orthopedic review this morning and it’s not good Severe osteoarthritis — no cartilage left And massive osteophytes that block range of motion They said mobility work is likely to be of no use — same with stem cells and PRP Gave me a cortisone shot and recommended finding ways to avoid impinging motion (no bench presses, etc). And told me I’ll definitely need shoulder replacement surgery in the future. I'm not happy about the diagnosis. But not surprised either. I will not let it deter me from living an active, fit & fulfilling life. So I won't be slowing down, though I'll be more mindful in what I do shoulder-wise Remember: We can't control what happens to us. But we can control how we respond to it. Focus on the latter. I am.

Inflammation isn’t always loud, but it’s often at the root of what we feel every day. Whether you’re managing a diagnosed condition or simply seeking better everyday wellness, the focus remains the same. Real wellness begins with understanding what’s happening beneath the surface

@VigilantFox Wow! I have not studied her; not sure where she got her nutritional or medical doctorate degree. However, I believe it is pretty well documented that there is no ‘obesity gene’. Obesity is a multifactorial condition based on many genes; more importantly influenced by lifestyle.
