Something I've been worrying about and broadcasting on for at least 5 years or so, but dissenters like myself are silenced: Celebrity campaigns have contributed to an “overmedicalisation” of the menopause and a view that older women are “diseased”. The experts warned that the menopause “has become sensationalised”. (In my view for monetary gain). A series of papers published on Tuesday in The Lancet concluded that there was no compelling evidence to support the widely held view that menopause increases the risk of mental health conditions. The international team of authors, which included Professor Myra Hunter from King’s College London, said that #menopause was not a disease and a medicalised view of the menopause could lead to over-treatment with HRT (It's a Lancet study but I doubt it'll get publicity) thetimes.co.uk/article/795018…

@VeraLynch17 @SaraMoger @minimars73 @drlouisenewson @MenoScandal Thank you Vera - No one is suggesting that cbt should be offered to women who want to have hrt - it is offerring those women who prefer not to use hrt and those for whom hrt is contraindicated a choice to use an evidence based non-hormonal option.

@minimars73 @drlouisenewson @MenoScandal There's a specific CBT protocol developed for women who can't or don't want to use HRT, it's designed to help women understand and manage hot flushes. I hate how this is being reported, because it's NOT a 'cheer up luv' thing at all. It's an option alongside HRT, not replacement

No one is claiming that it is a cure-all either.

Offer counselling over HRT for menopause, GPs told - why should women be offered a treatment that does not improve all symptoms nor reduce risks of diseases? CBT may have a role but not to have instead of HRT which is an evidence based treatment thetimes.co.uk/article/offer-…

Edana’s partner, Heather, and all the family are so sorry to have to tell you that Edana died on Wednesday night in her beloved Liguria. She was a woman of style, love, passion, joy, curiosity and furious politics, and she will be forever loved and missed. Minghella.com/remembering-ed…

@peppy_health @ThisisDavina Agree - this does not mean that suicide is caused by hormonal change - there is a midlife increase in anxiety/depression during midlife for both men and women, which gradually improves during mid to late 50s..

@MansfieldHerbal That’s the other statistic I’ll be writing about. I have finally found the source for the 900,000 figure and it’s seriously dodgy.

I quit my job a couple of months ago. Was it due to #Menopause ? Damn right it was- menopause has facilitated the liberation of refusing to take so much bs 💪🏼💃🏼Hope I haven't been included in statistics about women in their 50s leaving work due to disabling menopause symptoms??

@behindthewoman1 No evidence to support any of this! So pleased the Behind the Woman is responding to this unhelpful narrative.

A 'man',director of a 'strategy & communications consultancy' talking about how women should see #Menopause as a 'hormone deficiency' "because people are used to the idea of deficiencies" is not "giving women agency & confidence to feel in control of their bodies" #fridaymorning

We think conversations about the menopause are only just getting started. Our Strategy Director John explains. There’s so much to debunk and unravel! @TheMenoCharity #OwnYourMenopause

Still as relevant today! " Health education about #Menopause is still needed to actively challenge the combination of the biological/medical model and a degree of ageism and sexism in Western cultures and to promote a bio-psycho-social-cultural approach to this stage of life".

A decade ago we published this article on the menopause thepsychologist.bps.org.uk/volume-24/edit… Give us a shout if you work in the area…
