Before the fur trade started in the 1740s, there were somewhere between 150,000 and 300,000 sea otters across the North Pacific. By 1911, there were fewer than 2,000 left in the entire world. Every southern sea otter alive on the California coast today comes from a single group of about 50 animals found near Big Sur in 1938. One last thing the post leaves out. Sea otters are one of only five species on Earth that regularly use stone tools in the wild. Humans, chimpanzees, bearded capuchins, long-tailed macaques, and them. They are the only non-primate on that list. They carry favorite rocks around in pouches of loose skin under their armpits, and a 2019 paper in Scientific Reports identified shoreline rocks otters use as anvils, with wear patterns dated using the same archaeological methods used on early human tool sites.

This is an example and a vicious cycle, an evolutionary mechanism that worked in the Stone Age. Today's dietary environment is different, and the mismatch stems from this.

Net effect: an improved cardiovascular risk profile. But we're still restricting eggs in 2026, because a hypothesis from 1960 became a career, then a guideline, then a religion. And nobody in the building has the spine to admit it was wrong.
