In Arizona, a new chapter of space exploration is taking shape. HALO—Gateway’s first habitation module—is moving closer to completion. NASA and its partners are preparing to live, work, and explore more of the Moon and venture deeper into space than ever before. This is how humanity goes further. go.nasa.gov/4cS3rCT

Great question! Gateway’s first two elements, the Power and Propulsion Element and HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost), will take roughly year to reach lunar orbit because PPE will use a highly fuel efficient solar electric propulsion system to gradually guide both modules from Earth to the Moon. Unlike traditional chemical propulsion, which provides quick but fuel-hungry thrust, solar electric propulsion uses less fuel and applies a much gentler, continuous push over time. This makes it ideal for moving large spacecraft over long distances. By using this method, PPE can deliver both modules to the Moon while conserving its fuel, ensuring it can continue supporting Gateway’s position and operations once it’s in lunar orbit. 🌍➡️🌕 The Lunar Gateway Launch, mapped. Gateway's first elements, the Power and Propulsion Element and HALO, will launch together to lunar orbit, where they’ll set the stage for #Artemis IV: the first Gateway assembly mission. During that milestone mission, the Artemis IV crew will deliver @esa's Lunar I-Hab, dock it to HALO, and enter the station for the very first time. go.nasa.gov/42ST52d

A duo designed for deep space ✨🌕Gateway’s first two modules, the Power and Propulsion Element and HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost), are undergoing outfitting in the U.S. Once assembly is complete, they’ll be joined and launched to lunar orbit—where together, they’ll expand what’s possible for science, exploration, and sustained human presence in deep space. nasa.gov/gateway

Great question! Thales Alenia Space is an international company with experience building pressurized spacecraft modules. Northrop Grumman, NASA’s prime contractor for HALO, selected Thales as a subcontractor to fabricate the module’s external structure. After that work was completed in Italy, HALO was shipped to the U.S., where Northrop Grumman is now handling final outfitting ahead of launch. Learn more about Gateway here: nasa.gov/gateway-freque…

@NASAArtemis @NASA_Gateway Cool and all, but why was this component outsourced to Europe? It would be nice if Artemis could be an American achievement.

Flight status: ARRIVED ✅ After departing @Thales_Alenia_S and saying “arrivederci” to Italy, Gateway’s HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost) has landed stateside. At its facility in Gilbert, Arizona, @northropgrumman will complete HALO’s outfitting ahead of integration with the Power and Propulsion Element and launch to lunar orbit. Watch this space—Gateway’s journey to the Moon is just getting started! go.nasa.gov/4icmlFS

Big delivery for lunar exploration! ⚡🌙 @NASAglenn has received the first of three thrusters destined for the Gateway lunar space station. Over the next few months, they’ll complete testing on these Advanced Electric Propulsion System (AEPS) thrusters that will make Gateway the most powerful solar electric spacecraft ever flown. Built by @L3HarrisTech, the AEPS thrusters will integrate with Gateway’s Power and Propulsion Element and launch with the lunar space station’s HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost) ahead of #Artemis IV. The future of deep space exploration is electric—and it starts here.
