Powering the next giant leap. A novel electromagnetic thruster that runs on lithium metal vapor was successfully fired up for the first time during initial tests at JPL. Fully developed and paired with a nuclear power source, these thrusters could reduce launch mass and support payloads required for human Mars missions.

The spacecraft ➡️ some of the tech that hitched a ride to the @Space_Station! NASA Glenn researchers are leading the charge on this system, called IVGEN Mini, which could transform water into IV fluid on demand. Producing this life-saving liquid on the go could extend its shelf life and lighten cargo loads on future missions to deep space. After launching aboard NASA’s Northrop Grumman Commercial Resupply Services 24 mission, the technology arrived at the station on April 13, where it will be tested this spring and fall. Glenn engineers are testing a technology that could transform the way @NASA fuels future space exploration missions. ⛽ “If we can produce and liquefy oxygen on the Moon or Mars, we can fuel landers on the surface where they land, reducing the amount of propellant needed to launch from Earth,” said Evan Racine, manager for the project, called CryoFILL, at the center.
