Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Israel-Cyprus-Greece alliance: This is not only a source of concern for Turkey. All Muslim countries in the region are seriously worried and asking questions, especially considering Israel’s recent expansionist and aggressive policies in the region. It is not correct to claim that Turkey is unnecessarily creating concern here. There are realities, there are facts, there are people’s concerns. Turkey is capable of protecting itself. But there are countries in the region that are weaker in nature and look at this military alliance with concern.

Ah yes, the famous “Seville Map” a proposal so persuasive that even the EU chose not to adopt it. Yet somehow, it’s still being presented as if it carries legal weight. Let’s get one thing straight: Turkey is not a party to UNCLOS, and the views or interpretations of a framework it hasn’t signed simply do not bind it. That’s not controversial it’s basic international law.

Turkey is not a party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) — so selective readings of it don’t bind Ankara. At the same time, the Treaty of Lausanne (1923) and Paris Peace Treaty (1947) impose clear demilitarization obligations on certain Aegean islands. You can’t claim “international law” while ignoring the treaties you’ve signed. That’s not law. That’s convenience.
