@JOEYK20121 They don’t which is an issue, particularly at the u10-12 ages which is when technical development is the most critical. Improving the number of quality coaches is one of the biggest to-do’s imo

@AlexiLalas Don’t fix it by wanting to charge more like you say. That’s for sure.

I love that so many new people are contemplating youth soccer in America. It’s a wonderful byproduct of the World Cup. Hopefully new eyes bring new ideas to solve these evergreen challenges. But it easy to say something is broken, it’s harder to say how you’d fix it.🇺🇸⚽️

No, I’m advocating for workers to be paid as much a they can for their work.

@AlexiLalas You’re literally the only person in this country advocating for pay for play. Have some shame Alexi. Good lord

But wait, I’ve been told for years that a problem with youth soccer is that we don’t have our best coaches coaching our youngest players. But now, if they do coach young players, you don’t want to pay them?! Make up your mind America!
Jim@JimJim50863703

@AlexiLalas Yes, the point of coaching youth soccer should not be for a coach to make as much money as possible. If you want to make money coaching soccer, coach at higher levels and not youths.

@NBAL2M @jonathanshainin Correct. so dont think for one second we can just magically "pay for free soccer" like the original post says. Its always going to be from parents paying for their own kids to kick a ball around for 3 months a year

@ClayTravis Clay with lazy statistical reasoning. More gross numbers play soccer here than there. Let’s just ignore total population size though. Smh.

Extremely lazy — and common — argument. We have the luxury of wealth and a huge population in a sports obsessed country. We can — and should — be great at every sport we play in decent numbers. And millions of kids now play soccer every year. Way more 14 year olds play soccer here than in Belgium.
Uxi@uxixu

@ClayTravis Americans largely don't care about the sport. The best athletes choose the sports we do care about.

@FireupChips2629 @AlexiLalas It’s not the cost. It’s what the cost gets you. Lalas blow horning that he hopes youth sports clubs should make more might be the dumbest thing I’ve read in a while.

@NBAL2M @AlexiLalas See academies in US pay for the prospects. Same as in UK. A kid that wants to play at a level higher then the Sunday league in the UK still has to pay. Seen estimates around 500 pounds or 600 bucks US. Cheaper yes but people are just ignorant if they think soccer is free globaly

@MaureenONeill_ @AlexiLalas Seems like a wives tale. The real “good players” never actually become good and then don’t exist cause they don’t start because entry fee for parents at age 6 is $2k.

@NBAL2M @AlexiLalas The good players never have to pay if they can’t afford it. The clubs charge enough to cover this so essentially the rich parents are paying the way of the poor.

@NBAL2M @jonathanshainin Spending less money on youth soccer to make worse players than we already have, brilliant. Professional Football Clubs in Europe are spending 40 to 50 thousand per kid in their academy per year so that MAYBE 10 percent of them make it to their top team. We're so far behind.

@NBAL2M @jonathanshainin how expensive is what? we are spending 5.2 billion on youth soccer and cant win more than one world cup knockout game. How much more has to be spent to win a second one? Let alone win the tournament. Who is going to pay for the current 5.2 billion price tag, i ask again

@jonathanshainin okay...literally who is going to pay for all this free soccer? ive yet to see anyone answer that question with a serious answer that doesnt involve taxpayer dollars. So im going out on a limb to say thats your answer too? Completely unserious and total nonstarter.

As much as I hate to agree with Alexi Lalas, he isn't wrong. "Get rid of pay for play" as a solution to U.S. Soccer's problems has two flaws: 1) MLS clubs' youth players already mostly aren't paying. 2) Soccer costs money and someone has to pay for it. If not parents, then who?
Alexi Lalas@AlexiLalas

Youth soccer (youth sports) is a competitive market with businesses selling a product that obviously customers are willing to pay for. I’d love if soccer was free to all. But who is going to pay for all this free soccer?
