Zimbabwe is returning 67 farms that were seized from foreign owners during the land reform program of the early 2000s. Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka said the farms mainly belong to citizens of Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland under investment protection agreements. The government is also paying $146 million in compensation to resolve the disputes. The decision is expected to help improve relations with Western nations and support Zimbabwe’s efforts to ease its debt burden.

This is a quite surprising statement. It was not Germany, as falsely reported, but the Syrian President, who on the occasion of his visit to Germany, mentioned this number. The German Chancellor did not immediately challenge or contradict the statement. This was done a day later. The German ministry explained that the number of 700.000 over the period of three years was unrealistic and also technically impossible to achieve. The ministry also cited legal reasons for why such a high number (regardless of time constraints) was not part of any agreement.
