After celebrating Portal North Bridge last week with a ceremonial trip on Thursday with @NJTRANSIT and its early entry into service on Friday, today marks the first official day trains are traveling over the new bridge. As our President, Roger Harris said, “You’ve heard about the benefits that this new bridge will bring for a more reliable trip, and now it’s finally time to start experiencing them.”

Our B&P Tunnel Replacement Program recently achieved a major milestone for construction of a new 345-foot-long utility tunnel that runs under the Northeast Corridor (NEC) railroad tracks. Last month, our contractor "broke through" the final section of rock pillar separating both sides of the tunnel. The siphon tunnel is an essential enabling project for the future Frederick Douglass Tunnel. Once complete, it will carry key water, sewer, communication, and electrical utilities beneath the existing and future NEC railroad tracks.

FRA Administrator Fink had the opportunity to travel along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) to view the Connecticut River Bridge Replacement Project. At 116 years old, the current bridge is a major bottleneck risk to the reliability of the NEC. Replacing this aging rail infrastructure will improve safety, increase speeds, and ensure the future of NEC rail for all operators and passengers.

Thank you to FRA Administrator Fink for recently touring our B&P Tunnel Replacement Program construction site, where major utility relocations, bridge reconstruction, and other work is underway. The new, modern passenger train tunnel, commuter rail station, and other associated infrastructure improvements will deliver better service across America's busiest passenger railroad for generations to come. We look forward to continuing working closely with Administrator Fink and his staff to advance this critical investment.

Tunnel boring machines are not standard-issue construction equipment. Each TBM that we use for the Hudson Tunnel Project is a highly complex machine, custom-built for this project. The TBM in this video is on its way to New Jersey now. We'll reassemble it on site and start tunnel boring next year.

Get an inside look at our Connecticut River Bridge Project, which has made significant progress since breaking ground just over a year ago and remains on schedule and budget. The modern bridge replacement now under construction between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, CT, will improve reliability, boost top speeds by 55%, and deliver smoother, safer travel along the Northeast Corridor when it opens by 2031.
