@Kgothatsoxo it's because the DualShock 2 is backwards compatible with the PS1, and some games on the PS1 didn't work with analog controllers because originally there were no sticks on the PS1 pad. Thus, the PS1 needed that button to switch the DualShock 1's "mode", so to speak.

Till today I still don’t know what that analog button was used for on the PS 2 controller 😭
