As an urbanist I love travelling, but I got bored with European cities which started to look alike. Instead I began travelling through North Africa, and discovered great urban design practices that I think don't get enough credit. A thread on North African🇲🇦🇩🇿🇹🇳🇱🇾🇪🇬 cities:

@SultanAlQassemi Good Libya examples are the revival of community art in Benghazi after the war, and the rehabilitation of Tripoli's Old City.

Imagine being a North African woman overcoming countless social and political obstacles - especially rigid gender norms - to make it to the Olympics, only to have an incoherent right-wing mob try to force those same norms on you. Solidarity with Imane Khelif

Tracking the Urbicide unfolding in Gaza since Oct 7th. Digitally constructing Gaza serves as an act of archiving, countering erasure, reclaiming its existence, and providing a reset point for where the conversation can begin. More on ➡️ beiruturbanlab.com/en/Details/197…

“The richest, most powerful countries in the western world, those who believe themselves to be the keepers of the flame of the modern world’s commitment to democracy and human rights, are openly financing and applauding Israel’s genocide in Gaza.” scroll.in/article/106486…

In her coverage of Bosnia, Amanpour had said "I realized that our job is to give all sides an equal hearing, but in cases of genocide, you can't just be neutral...there is no equality." Sadly this is not reflected in her coverage of the ongoing Gaza genocide
Christiane Amanpour@amanpour

Over 100 people killed in Gaza amidst gunfire & a stampede, when the IDF opened fire as hungry Palestinian civilians rushed to rare aid trucks, according to the Ministry of Health. Tonight I spoke with @MarkRegev, senior adviser to Israel’s PM, about this & the dire lack of aid.

"In Gaza you can witness what the end of the world will look like." In December, Hudia, a refugee in Rafah, kept a diary of the horrors Israel has been visiting upon Gaza since October. This is testimonial 18 of our Palestine Uncensored series.

As an urban designer, I find this article appalling & horrific in its implications - design cities as barracks to withstand more wars, instead of addressing militarization policies, accountability for war crimes or arms proliferation. Surprised that @UDGUrbanUpdate shared this.

Designing a city for resiliency and civil protection — so-called “passive defense” — is not enough. Countries must also design cities that are easy for their soldiers to defend. inkstickmedia.com/designing-war-…
