One of the main culprits: music. Artists like Alesso, Martin Garrix, Dom Dolla, and others have highlighted the issue, showing the harsh reality of tinnitus — the perception of sound in the ears or head without an external source. Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause hearing loss and tinnitus. That post-concert ringing may seem harmless, but it signals minor ear damage that can become permanent. The human ear wasn’t designed for today's loud environments. Yet, unlike annual visits to the dentist or optometrist, few people see an audiologist until it’s too late. To better understand the epidemic, we spoke with Dr. Shannon Switzer, a Chicago-based audiologist and dance music fan, one of only 15 in the U.S. specializing full-time in music industry audiology. Dr. Switzer explains that, unlike industrial spaces, “there are no legal standards to regulate music as a potential source of sound injury.” “What makes sound dangerous comes down to volume and exposure time — and dance music fans and artists often log longer, louder hours than anyone else.” “If people don’t start changing their behaviors, a large percentage of people are going to have some form of hearing loss, tinnitus, or both.” That’s why hearing protection is more crucial now than ever. A common misconception is that earplugs diminish the live music experience. In reality, the right earplug can actually enhance audio quality. While researching this feature, we found that universal options like Eargasm and Loop are effective and affordable, but custom-fitted models like Sensaphonics really stood out, proving worth the extra step and investment.
