@brady_h It’s because everyone runs a 5k as part of their long run and never run it at the effort it requires to chase their potential. It’s literally so much harder than a marathon you are redlining for like 70% of the race.

I have heard that I’m sometimes known as the “You’re Awesome Guy.” If you run, bike, or hike on the trails around Boulder, we will probably cross paths eventually. And I will probably tell you that you’re awesome. I am aware that people aren’t always calling me that in a complimentary way. I’m cool with it. I distinctly remember having a realization when I was in 6th grade, in the backseat of the car on the way to a baseball game: We all die. There really might be nothing beyond the inky blackness that we all see when we close our eyes. Everyone is going through the same crap, screaming silently in their own version of the backseat of the car. I had two big conclusions after that drive. One, like most kids of the late 90s/early 00s who thought too much, I decided that emo music was great. Two, I decided to do what I can (as an introverted, self-doubting kid) to let people know they were not alone—assuming that on some level, they felt the same scared feelings I did. Hopefully, if you met me since April 2000, I have said something that adds the smallest pinprick of light to the darkness. On trails, that usually gets distilled down to a passing phrase: You’re awesome. Implied: we are hurtling through the cosmos at unimaginable speed in the never-ending expansion of the universe, and I am happy to be hurtling on this space rock with you. Also, My Chemical Romance rules. Autumn is the best time to be an athlete. The temperature is better, the views are unmatched, Noah Kahan’s music hits just right. But it’s something deeper, too. On some level, we all know we’re hurtling toward winter. And I think that’s a metaphor for life in general. This moment is impermanent, and that makes this moment so much more special. It’s ok that to be scared and unsure. There’s no light at the end of the tunnel, just more tunnel. Let’s gather as many pinpricks of light as we can, and let’s try to have a silly, potentially meaningless little party in the tunnel. Or to put it another way: YOU’RE AWESOME 💛

Sean Hartnett's mapping of marathon routes is phenomenal. Here's his latest work on the hilly section of the Paris Olympic course. I don't know that it has sunk in with viewers yet how grueling it will be. Downhills as punishing as uphills.

@Predamame I agree, having personalities like his is good for the sport. He brings eyes and views just by his style.

@stevemagness When Jakob blocked him the first time around the turn I was like oh no he’s gonna have to bounce outside but he just waited knowing it would be there.

It’s crazy the patience Hocker had to wait for it to open up on the inside. It generally does as the leader drifts out…but it’s nerve wracking.

Here's the splits for that 1,500m...absolutely insane... 1:51.5 through 800... Look at that last 300... 13.3, 13.3, 13.0...That's 39.6 off a HARD pace for Cole Hocker. USA 1-3-5 is nuts. Nothing Jakob could do on this one. The other guys were better today.

This 10,000m race has me glued to the TV. American almost wiped out mid-race but got back on the horse. Ethiopians working together, conversing mid-race. Ugandan asserted dominance with some hand fighting. The drama is phenomenal. Oh yeah and the pace is insane. #Olympics

The Road to Paris World Rankings have been updated after the qualification period ended on June 30th. For those wondering where Parker Wolfe stands... – Parker Wolfe, who finished third at the U.S. Olympic Trials 5000m final, is ranked No. 45 (tied with a few other runners so sorta 46th) and may need a couple runners to come out of the quota ahead of him. – After his runner-up finish at the Trials behind Grant Fisher (No. 10), Abdihamid Nur (No. 29) would replace Cooper Teare (No. 15) as the United States' No. 2 runner in the quota. – South Africa's Adriaan Wildschutt (No. 21) would come out of the quota since he will only run the 10,000m at the Paris Olympics – Nico Young (No. 22) would come out of the quota since he did not contest the 5000m at the U.S. Olympic Trials. – New Zealand's George Beamish (No. 34) would come out of the quota since he will only run the steeplechase at the Paris Olympics. – It looks to me like Team GB would send three runners – Patrick Dever and two from George Mills, Sam Atkin and Jack Rowe. James West, who won their Trials, is not qualified. Atkin (who has the standard) got a medical exemption so didn't run the Trials. Rowe who had the standard got third. So British Athletics has two discretionary spots. Devers is the only lock with his runner-up finish at the Trials. So British Athletics could also technically only choose to send one guy. If we look at spots No. 43; No. 44 and No. 45 ⤵️ – I believe Switzerland will send Jonas Raess (No. 43) – I believe Serbia will send Elzan Bibić (No. 44) – I have no clue what Eritrea will decide with Dawit Seare (No. 45). He did run 13:07.77 in Vienna last month. I believe it will come down to one scratch and it has to be from a country that doesn’t have others with standards or within the rankings quota above Parker.
