#OTD, 1623 Thomas Snelling died (39) during his term as Mayor of #KingsLynn. His father (also Thomas) was 2x Mayor of Thetford & his father-in-law, Matthew Clarck was 2x Mayor of Lynn. Thomas’ wall memorial @StNicksKL shows that he & his wife, Margaret, had 3 sons & a daughter.

Amazing volunteers at @NorfolkRO making great progress cataloguing a volume found in box of penances. Thank you. Fornication by far the most common crime. Info will eventually go into NRO catalogue. It'll be great source for family & local historians. #nropenanceproject

Archivists love little insights into process. Luck has meant this 300 year old note's survived at @NorfolkRO. It's a lawyer's instruction found in box of penances, re a fornication case. It says go easy on the unnamed accused as he's married his co-fornicator. #nropenanceproject

New @NorfolkRO blog (norfolkrecordofficeblog.org/2022/07/02/too…) is all about penances. It relates to a letter of support used by a James Lacey who went before church courts for doing something 'too common amongst young people'. #nropenanceproject

Typical schedule of penance of 1740 found loose in box at @NorfolkRO . Despite marrying, John and Ann Aldred of Burgh, Suffolk had to confess in front of whole church for heinous sin of fornicating before they were married. #nropenanceproject
