People say “be yourself and the right people will love you.” It sounds nice. It sounds comforting. But the uncomfortable truth is that the world does not reward authenticity as much as it rewards value. A man can be kind, loyal, honest, and still be ignored if he has nothing going for him. A woman can be genuine and loving, yet invisible in rooms where appearance and status dominate. Society praises authenticity in speeches, but in real life people respond to power, competence, confidence, and results. That doesn’t mean you should become fake. But it does mean something many people don’t like to admit: Being yourself is not enough. You also have to become someone the world cannot easily overlook. Authenticity without growth becomes comfort. And comfort rarely changes your life.

Much of the right’s inability to admit that it got Trump wrong comes down to sunk cost. There’s often more, like professional, social, and financial networks at stake. But psychologically, it is very hard for these people to admit Trump has always been a fraud, and that the last decade of right-wing populism has been a disaster for America. So they’ll keep to the path, forcing the rest of the country to suffer because pride prevents them from admitting that they were wrong.
