Een 25-jarige Spaanse vrouw die een juridische strijd voerde om euthanasie te krijgen, is overleden nadat ze levensbeëindigende medicijnen had gekregen. Ze kampte sinds haar tienerjaren met psychische problemen.
Spanje heeft in 2021 wetgeving aangenomen die euthanasie mogelijk maakt voor mensen die een terminale ziekte hebben of ondraaglijk lijden. Noelia Castillo had in april 2024 om euthanasie gevraagd. Een commissie van artsen, advocaten en ethisch adviseurs beoordeelde haar toestand als ernstig en ongeneeslijk en willigde het verzoek in.
Voordien had ze twee keer een zelfmoordpoging gedaan, de tweede keer in 2022 nadat ze seksueel was misbruikt. Door het letsel dat ze door haar tweede poging opliep was ze in een rolstoel beland.
Na de inwilliging van haar euthanasieverzoek ontspon zich een lange juridische strijd. Haar ouders verzetten zich tegen de beslissing, samen met de conservatieve katholieke organisatie Abogados Cristianos (Christelijke Advocaten).
Enige interview
Castillo's jonge leeftijd en de strijd die haar familie voerde om haar tegen te houden veroorzaakten veel ophef in de publieke opinie. Uiteindelijk oordeelde de rechtbank dat de vrouw het recht had om een einde aan haar leven te maken.
De advocaat van de ouders zei dat de familie diep teleurgesteld was over de uitkomst. De ouders vinden dat de regering hun dochter in de steek heeft gelaten.
Gisteren werd het enige interview dat Noelia Castillo heeft gegeven uitgezonden op tv- zender Antena 3. Daarin sprak ze openlijk over haar euthanasie. "Eindelijk, het is me gelukt, dus laten we kijken of ik nu eindelijk tot rust kan komen," zei ze. "Ik kan gewoon niet meer verder."
