First and foremost is reliability (as others have said) - an unreliable firearm is generally not enjoyable to shoot. Personal interests heavily influence enjoyment. My background with firearms is from my time military and most of my range time is shooting military-style weapons. Revolvers, lever-action rifles and so on can be fun from time to time, but they don't motivate me to get out and shoot every week. Recoil and noise tolerance matter a great deal. Some people do not seem to mind high levels of recoil or noise, while others never seem to develop a tolerance for anything other than small caliber weapons. The type of shooting being done also influences the equation. The range I primarily shoot at is not optimal for reactive, multi-target shooting. It can be done, but it requires thought to plan the shooting drill so that it is effective and practical in nature. As a consequence, I have to tailor my training to what is permitted at the range. This tailoring then determines, to some degree, the firearms that are enjoyable to train with.
