🚨 @NWS has issued a Flood Advisory & Severe Thunderstorm Warning for NYC. New Yorkers should take every precaution and follow guidance from @nycemergencymgt and @notifynyc ⬇️
NYC Emergency Management@nycemergencymgt

As thunderstorms move across the city, New Yorkers should stay alert and take precautions now.

Call 911 if you are in immediate danger, trapped by rising water, or see a life-threatening situation.

If you hear thunder, go inside. Damaging winds are the primary hazard we are monitoring tonight. Move into a sturdy building, stay away from windows, and go to an interior room. Avoid rooftops, balconies, porches, glass doors, plumbing, and electrical equipment. If thunderstorm warnings are issued, stay in your safe indoor location. Heavy rain can also cause flash flooding. If you live in a basement, low-lying area, or a place that has flooded before, move early. Do not wait to see water. If flooding begins, move to a higher floor right away.
Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Turn around, do not drive through flooded roads or underpasses, and never go around barricades. Floodwater can rise quickly, hide hazards, and carry electrical current or contamination.
Avoid flooded basements, subway stations, and underpasses.

Keep your phone nearby, alerts turned on, and volume up. Conditions can change quickly, especially at night. Subscribe to @NotifyNYC for alerts, including for basement apartments.

For more information, visit nyc.gov/beready to read tips on thunderstorms and flash floods.

Congratulations to HTC for winning a transformative contract for our city’s hotel workers. With this contract, tens of thousands of hotel housekeepers, cooks, servers, dishwashers, and staff can afford to continue calling New York City home.
Hotel and Gaming Trades Council@NYHTC

Our new contract ensures hotel workers will have the best wages and benefits in the country, and delivers life-changing financial stability to the 30,000 members who are the backbone of the hospitality industry. This is an extraordinary victory for hotel workers, the industry, and all of New York City. nytimes.com/2026/05/18/nyr…

Food stamp work requirements don’t create jobs, they create hunger. If the federal government wanted to help people find work, it would invest in public jobs programs and guarantee a living wage. Instead, it’s punishing people who are already struggling to survive. These rules took effect on March 1, meaning benefit reductions could begin as early as June 1. Find out whether you’re subject to these requirements — and how to stay compliant — by calling 718-SNAP-NOW (718-762-7669).
HRA@NYCHRA

🚨 New federal rules mean that New Yorkers ages 18-64 must now meet work requirements to keep their SNAP benefits. These rules took effect on 3/1, which means reductions in benefits could occur as early as 6/1. Need help? CALL 718-SNAP-NOW (718-762-7669).

New York: today starts hot and ends stormy. Heat index up to 95°. Heavy rain, wind gusts, and thunderstorms are possible later today.
Drink water. Stay cool. Use a cooling center if you need one — call 311 or visit finder.nyc.gov/coolingcenters.
If storms hit: take mass transit when possible, avoid flooded stations and basements, and stay clear of downed trees and power lines. If you hear thunder, head indoors.
And please check in on your neighbors. If you see a homeless New Yorker who needs help, call 311.

The path to universal child care is now six blocks shorter. Thanks to our expanded 3-K programming, thousands of families will have access to affordable programs closer to home. That means less time spent commuting and more time focused on what matters most: our children, our families, and our communities.

I am devastated to learn of the death of a person in City custody this morning. My heart is with their loved ones and everyone impacted by this unimaginable loss.   The Department of Correction and our oversight partners have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding this death.   Our administration remains firmly committed to the urgent and essential work of creating better conditions in our city’s jail system and closing Rikers Island as quickly as possible.

This ruling is a victory for New York’s immigrant communities and for the basic principle that no one should fear detention for seeking justice or following the law. These courthouse enforcement tactics spread fear and undermined trust in our legal system. Yesterday’s decision restores accountability and makes clear that our courts cannot be used as tools of intimidation. New York City will continue standing with immigrant New Yorkers in the face of ICE's cruelty.

I was thrilled to honor the legendary Ruth Messinger at our pre-Shavuot celebration at Gracie Mansion for Jewish American Heritage Month. Jewish Americans have long been trailblazers for justice, from labor leaders like Clara Lemlich and Rose Schneiderman to Civil Rights leaders like Henry Moskowitz, Rabbi Heschel, and Marjorie G. Wyler — Ruth Messinger’s mother — who marched from Selma alongside Dr. King. In order to ensure that Jewish communities can continue to thrive here, my administration is increasing hate crime prevention funding by 800% — because New York must be a place where everyone can live safely and freely. Whether you are about to finish counting the Omer or are looking forward to cheesecake, Chag Sameach and happy Jewish American Heritage Month!

I’m grateful that LIRR unions and the MTA reached an agreement tonight that recognizes both the critical importance of the LIRR and the workers who keep it running.

Phased LIRR service will resume tomorrow at noon, so New Yorkers should continue to make alternative travel plans and expect travel delays in the morning if they typically commute via the LIRR.

City Hall and City agencies will continue to coordinate to monitor traffic conditions, keep commuters safe, and support New Yorkers.

The MTA will provide limited bus service for essential workers and those who cannot telecommute. Visit mta.info for more information.
