DSNY has 10,000 employees who plow 6,000 miles of streets each winter and collect 24 million pounds of waste every single day. New York’s strongest deserve a leader they can count on. I am proud to appoint Gregory Anderson as our new Commissioner of the Department of Sanitation. Anderson was a key architect of New York City’s “trash revolution” — he’s one of the big reasons you’re seeing more bins around town. Earlier this week, I broke fast at Rikers Island with New Yorkers in custody, Department of Correction staff, Commissioner Stanley Richards, and Councilmember Yusef Salaam. It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time. People sharing what little they have: breaking bread, offering prayer, making space for one another’s dignity even in the hardest place. In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to give—mercy, dignity, and humanity. May we extend that mercy as far as we can. Eid Mubarak to all.

Nowruz Mubarak to all the Iranian Americans who call New York City home! It was an honor to celebrate Charshanbeh Soori with so many of you in anticipation of spring, renewal, and - now especially - the enduring hope of a new day for the Iranian people. 
Nowruz is typically a time of good feeling, but this year is different. I continue to stand in opposition to this war, and I wish as many moments of joy as possible for all Iranians observing this special holiday.

I campaigned on a commitment to create the Department of Community Safety, an unprecedented, whole-of-government approach to making sure every New Yorker is safe in our city. We just took a major step towards achieving it. Today, I signed an Executive Order creating the Office of Community Safety, led by our new Deputy Mayor Renita Francois. This office will focus on preventing gun-violence, meeting mental health crises with trained professionals, exploring innovative approaches to crime prevention, tackling hate crimes, and supporting survivors. Our city has the power to forge a bold, forward-looking vision for community safety -- and we're wasting no time using it.

Today, an administrative immigration judge ordered the deportation of Rafael Rubio, a City Council employee. This is an affront to justice. A dedicated public servant with legal authorization to remain in the country, Rafael showed up for a routine immigration appointment and, despite following the rules, he was detained and has now been held for months. He should be immediately released.

We want to make it as easy (and affordable) as possible for you to do that. NYC recently legalized ADUs — but for too many New Yorkers, they’re still tied up in bureaucracy and expense. If we want New York to remain a city for everyone, we have to make it easier for homeowners to stay here. ADU for You will do just that.

Our City is overjoyed that Dylan has finally been released from detention and will be back home with his loved ones in the Bronx. What should have been a time for him to focus on finishing high school instead became ten long months of isolation, after he was taken into custody at what was supposed to be a routine immigration hearing last May. Throughout this injustice, Dylan has shown remarkable strength, resilience, and courage. I wish him a smooth and joyful return to his life, his community, and his future here in New York City. He is a New Yorker, and our city is glad to have him home.
