Happy first day of spring, New York! 🌷 Though it seemed like a brutally cold winter, it was actually only slightly below-average compared to a 30-years of data. While the end of March is forecasted to be below normal, a shift to above normal temperatures is possible in April. ☀️

This afternoon, areas of NY saw 80F temperatures for the first time since last fall! The last 80F values across the @nysmesonet occurred on October 19th when Louisville reached 81F. In #NYC, Central Park appears to have reached their earliest 80F+ high on record.

With melting snow and ice, alongside some rain and warming temperatures, we're seeing numerous river rises leading to some flooding. Did you know our website has a community page (nyswrcc.org/community-stats)? There's ~168K people & ~63K residential buildings in a flood warning.

Wondering if the snowfall reports are record breaking? We got you! For the hardest hit counties, here's a list of the prior 1-day record, as well as the max snowfall report in each county today. 4 (!) counties have tentatively set records, though they will be investigated.

Our director, Nick Bassill, was happy to chat with Aylin Woodward at the WSJ about our nor'easter, which will be remembered for a long time.

As we approach the onset of heavier snow, let's take stock of the forecast. The most severe impacts are expected across downstate NY, where the Winter Storm Severity Index is at a very rare "extreme" level. This is due to a forecast of 18"+ of snow and 50+ mph wind gusts.

By our estimates, there are 13,812,837 people currently under a blizzard warning in NY! While the 1,563,071 estimated kids under 10 are no doubt looking forward to a snow day ☃️, the 628,380 adults with independent living difficulty may benefit from a helping hand tomorrow.

A multi-hazard storm will impact the state tomorrow morning through Saturday morning, bringing rain, ice, and wet snow. Make sure you are weather-aware and using caution while driving.

New York! This is the first time in almost 3 weeks that the whole state is reading above 0°F. Turn on that Jimmy Buffet! 🍹🏖️

Whew, there's that cold air! Expect brutal conditions through Monday. Temps will begin to gradually normalize Tuesday.

Brrrr, New York! It will be dangerously cold this Sunday. Fashion coats, sit this one out. This is a job for the big puffer. 🧥

Here's our best depiction of what's to come over the next 18 hours or so. The heaviest snow should *mostly* be contained to eastern upstate NY, though other locations in upstate will continue to see snow, with pockets of heavier snow. Downstate will likely continue to see a mix.

We're getting everything winter has to offer this weekend. Last night, temperatures dropped to their lowest level in years in some places, with values as low as -38F according to the @nysmesonet.🥶 On Sunday into Monday, a storm will bring 10-20" of snow for much of New York.🌨️

@markfoggin @NWSNewYorkNY @nycemergencymgt @NYSDHSES It's the equivalent of a 1 credit course, with credentialing through UAlbany. This was our 2nd time teaching it, and we will settle into a rotation of 3 times each year. Currently it is only available to public-sector/government employees, because those are who we serve.

Earlier this week we taught our "Introduction to Weather Interpretation" class in NYC at @nycemergencymgt to an eager audience of 22 graduates. We thank NYC EM for being excellent hosts, and also @NWSNewYorkNY for helping teach part of the class!

These are some serious snow rates out of Redfield, NY where the mesonet station is recording up to 5"/HR !

NY Weather in Review: On Feb. 20, 2025: Lake Erie was 95.8% frozen, which is the most frozen the lake has been since 2015. Lake Ontario was 26.1% frozen, which is the most frozen the lake has been since 2022. It was a notable increase from 2024 which peaked at 5.3%.

Our SWRCC main office got a Christmas present this year too - the start of construction to enlarge our space so it's more functional and efficient. Our New Year's Resolution is to move back in as soon as possible!
