Can't agree with this enough. I have a degree in Computer Games Programming. When I was applying for courses with the goal of being a games developer, the three main course categories I came across were games programming, game art, and game design (design being less common but still existing). There was a fourth nebulous category called "video games development". These taught you a little bit of everything - a bit of scripting, a bit of design philosophy, the basics of modelling (which we did in 3rd year games programming anyway...), a bit about marketing & publishing, a bit about a lot of things really. Key point is none of them were deep enough for you to be seen as a "specialist". You can guess which categories held more prestige and had tighter connections with industry 🤷‍♂️ Even worse, the most elite programmers didn't even study Games Programming - they studied Computer Science but just happened to love games! No one can force you - if esports is your passion and your heart is set on an esports degree, go for it. My warning would be not to be shocked if you struggle to walk into a role afterwards because you're locked into an industry in which there aren't all that many roles available globally. Instead, I'd suggest picking a mainline skill and doing extra work to specialise in esports. For example, study Journalism and write about esports during that time. Study Media and get into production in esports during that time. Study programming and build websites/apps for an esports audience during that time. These specialised skills are much more transferable if you find yourself struggling to secure a role in esports. TL;DR you can chase your passion (esports) without doing an esports degree so think about your future wisely.
