1. The killing of 17 yr old Arulpius is not an anomaly but an eg of the indiscriminate use of lethal force by the police. This is enabled by inadequate training of police in the use of firearms. So even when they intend to disable vehicle it may result in death.

Deeply disappointing that govt at UN Comm on Enforced Disappearances (CED) creates false impression @kumanan93 engaged in illegal/terrorist activities. Summoning him for interrogation is egregious as it is reprisal for doing his job, to slander him in this way at UN is appalling

1)Solidarity and support shown to @kumanan93 is heartening. But when supporting ppl experiencing protection issues, there are principles to which you must adhere. Most imp is ‘do no harm’-every action should help and not harm person. Always ask if it is in person’s best interest

The 40th commemoration of the massacre of 32 Tamils in #Othiyamalai, Mullaitivu, by the Sri Lankan army in 1984 was remembered today . The organizers reported that police came to the venue yesterday and intimidated them into removing the loud speakers and asked them this morning to restrict the event to box speakers. Intelligence were seen in the vicinity without number plates on their bikes as well. The villagers asked what is the point in the new government publicly saying memorial events are allowed and then intimidate them and monitor the events.

Couldn't be more wrong! Trust is earned and not simply given. what has NPP done to earn the trust so far? What a simple take that lacks nuanced understanding of Tamil electoral politics!

5/Showing solidarity with survivors of war is important. But performative solidarity that centres oneself, denies respect to survivors, is insensitive or exploits survivors and their pain only causes harm. Sharing poem I wrote last year in response to such supposed “solidarity”.
