Howard Beckett@BeckettUnite

Spain's ‘23 contribution to UNRWA was €18.5ml. Including €10ml which was approved in December. They have taken the decision to almost triple Palestine humanitarian funding to €50ml. Spain stands against the slaughter of children. Against genocide. Viva España! 🇪🇸 🇵🇸

There are states that refuse to be swept away by anti-Palestinian racism & blind allegiance to Israel. Thank you Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Norway, & Spain for exercising moral judgment & not defunding UNRWA.

I rarely praise the Guardian but this is a extraordinary visual investigation of the sheer level of destruction in Gaza: theguardian.com/world/ng-inter… Absolutely crystal clear when you look through it that the objective is to render the place utterly inhabitable, and destroy Palestinian civil society. Places destroyed are homes, mosques, schools, hospitals, cemeteries, historical landmarks, supermarkets, etc. Everything that makes up a community. Complete disconnect from the stated goal of fighting Hamas.

The brazen hypocrisy of Israeli security forces, accusing Hamas of hiding behind protected medical facilities & misusing ambulances in Gaza, while themselves use the cover of medical professionals to carry out covert killings shouldn’t be lost on anyone. bbc.co.uk/news/world-mid…

Insane documentation of the Israeli death-squad disguised as Palestinian civilians and medical workers, which murdered three Palestinians inside Ibn Sina hospital this morning in Jenin, occupied West Bank.

If 0.04% of UNRWA staff were implicated in a violent attack that led some Western countries to collectively punish 30,000 of their colleagues & 2.3m of their compatriots, what is the proportional punishment for the genocide being carried out by the Israeli gov't, army & settlers?
Sami Abou Shahadeh@ShahadehAbou

There are 12 @unrwa employees that allegedly participated in the October 7 attacks, clearly not in their official capacity. Certain countries decided to collectively punish 30,000 employees and 2 million Palestinians in Gaza. There is plausible evidence that Israel has been committing the crime of Genocide as investigated by the @CIJ_ICJ. The same countries keep their relations with Tel Aviv intact, including military aid. Meanwhile 12 Israeli ministers joined a genocidal conference calling for ethnic cleansing. Nothing changes. Does anyone have any doubts why the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada and Germany are seen as part of the problem for the Global South?

Whatever your position is, just take a moment to reflect on just how dark this is. Just hours after the ICJ concluded that Israel was plausibly committing genocide and ordered it to dramatically step up humanitarian efforts, 7 Western countries sanctioned... not Israel but the Palestinians and the UN (!!!). They cut funding for UNRWA, which is THE UN agency tasked with humanitarian assistance to Palestinians (and therefore their main lifeline). Even if you were the world's worst cynic, you'd still have a hard time expecting such sheer level of cruelty and depravation. This is absolutely unfathomable. They did so with the cheapest possible excuse, effectively using Israel's narrative that "UNWRA is Hamas" and allegations by Israel that some UNWRA staff were involved in the 7th Oct attack but 1) Israel has been making these accusations for months (so the timing of cutting funding right after the ICJ ruling is obviously not a coincidence) and 2) UNWRA has announced it's terminated the contracts of the staff members accused (12 people out of its 30,000 strong workforce) and launched an investigation, so it obviously doesn't condone this. Even if the allegations were to be proven correct, how can an organization of 30,000 staff be held collectively accountable for the individual actions of 0.04% of its workforce? Especially in the current context when its work is a life or death matter for millions of people. To add to the cynicism here, UNWRA staff are actually a major victim of the war with at least 152 UNRWA staffers killed by Israel in Gaza to date. In a normal world, it is Israel that should be punished for killing so many members of a humanitarian organization. But nope, it's the humanitarian organization that's getting punished, alongside with the very vulnerable population it's committed to helping.
Middle East Eye@MiddleEastEye

The following 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 have suspended Unrwa funding based on Israeli claims that 12 of the agency's 30,000 employees took part in Hamas attacks: 🇺🇸 US 🇨🇦 Canada 🇬🇧 UK 🇫🇮 Finland 🇦🇺 Australia 🇮🇹 Italy 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway and 🇮🇪 Ireland said they would not follow suit. Switzerland said no decision till accusations are clarified. 𝐔𝐧𝐫𝐰𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬: • It has 30,000 employees, 13,000 of which are in Gaza. • Most of them are Palestine refugees and a small number of international staff. • In Gaza, it runs 183 schools, 22 health facilities and seven women's centres, among several other facilities. • Its schools are attended by 286,645 students in Gaza, while its medical facilities have 3.4 million average visits per year, according to UN data.

They don’t even ask for an independent investigation or wait for the results of UNRWA’s investigation. They immediately take measures against a whole organisation that’s providing vital services to the captive & slaughtered people of Gaza, on the basis of accusations against 12.
Nour Odeh 🇵🇸🍉 #FreePalestine@nour_odeh

The UK, Italy & Finland join the cruelty squad and suspend funding to UNRWA, the largest humanitarian org in Gaza! They know what this means. They know this means that the epic humanitarian catastrophe Israel caused in Gaza will only get worse thanks to their actions.

You've frankly got to marvel at the West's (utter lack of) strategy in the red sea. The US and the UK managed to get their ships banned from the red sea passage after their bombing campaign. Meanwhile China, unaffected by the ban, is quite logically redeploying its ships to serve the route, taking advantage of the new competitive advantage that they got served on a golden platter. The US then asks China to bail them out and help them curb the attacks, bizarrely preferring to go through the humiliation of begging their main geopolitical rival for help rather than rein in Israel. And the weirdest thing is: why on earth would China do that? The U.S. has been multiplying hostile moves on China for years, they've made it clear that their principal objective remains to contain China and they've now shot themselves in the foot in a way that benefits China. How far gone can they be to think China would help in that context? China's response was that "the Red Sea tension is a 'spillover' from the Gaza conflict, which should be ended as soon as possible". In other words: fix your own goddam mess!
