@academic_la You're such a hack. Who polarized the region? Egypt? UAE? No. Every country not named Israel was united in support of Pali statehood until Iran and its proxies set out to murder their own citizens on the alter of destroying Israel. The 2 state solution was collateral damage.

This is stupid on two levels: 1) Saudi Arabia has no interest in recognizing Israel without advancing Palestinian statehood. It has said so repeatedly for years. 2) The Abraham Accords are a useless instrument in terms of advancing regional peace, since it only involves countries not at war. The only thing it does is isolate Iran and the Palestinians, which is what led to this crisis to begin with. So this is a non-starter and even if it wasn't, there would be nothing gained from this.

So since we've been talking about reading, complexity of lexicon etc. - question (esp to those taking part in that conversation). As you may know, I recently finished a new translation of Les Liaisons dangereuses. Still tinkering with it before trying to get it published. In Letter 125, reporting his "conquest" of Madame de Tourvel, Valmont, troubled by the thought that he may be in love, acknowledges that he had "moments of weakness" resembling "cette passion pusillanime." The most literal translation is obviously "that pusillanimous passion," used in several older translations. Doug Parmée's 1995 translation uses "that anemic passion," which ... just feels all wrong. Valmont's problem isn't that it's a weak passion, it's that he regards it as a passion fit for weaklings. Helen Constantine's 2007 translation tries to capture that with "this unmanly passion," which is closer to the meaning but "gendered" in a way that the original isn't. (Especially since Valmont is writing to Merteuil, his female libertine confederate who also regards herself as impervious to/superior to love.) I've considered just going with "pusillanimous passion." It's not considered an out-of-use word; it even appears in a 2022 NY Post headline, "Politico's pusillanimous pandering on Hunter Biden." (And I'm pretty sure that even in 1782, it was a "fancy word.") OTOH, even literate readers may stumble on it a bit and, worse, think that it has something to do with "pussy." 😝(Which isn't altogether wrong if you think of "pussy" in the pejorative sense of "weakling!") Anyway, my current draft has "this abject passion." (I've also tried "this fainthearted passion" and "this craven passion," which wasn't working for me either.) Thoughts? Suggestions? Pussy jokes?
