When I joined the tourism industry after pursuing my degree in Business Administration at Makerere University Business School, my parents were so disappointed to the extent that we lost contact for over a year. Later, when my mother (RIP) was diagnosed with cancer, she spent over 1 year and 2 months admitted between Mulago National Referral Hospital and Nyambya Hospital, receiving treatment while bedridden. After she slowly recovered and before they took her back to Kabale, I requested my parents to allow me to take them for a short tour to the nearest tourism site in Kampala. My dad agreed and personally drove my mom from the hospital. I took them to Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, and for the first time, I fully took up the guiding role in front of them. My mother had never been there before, unlike my father who used to trek from Kabale to Kampala during Martyrs Day pilgrimages. After the tour, my mother managed to walk a few steps and then told me words that changed my life forever: “I have really blessed you. Go and continue with tourism.” Deep inside, I cried. A few weeks later, my mother was rushed back to Kampala in critical condition. The day she passed on, I was on safari. Before her passing, she called my cousin sister and gave her a long speech that still keeps me pushing up to today. Some people ask me why I am so passionate about Uganda’s tourism, why I speak about it with so much pride, and why I behave like I am the first person to truly love this industry. The truth is, there is an inner energy that keeps telling me to push even harder and I will. Tourism is no longer just work to me. It became purpose.
