Making a false statement to the Police might not be a penal offense but making one with an aim to misuse the SC/ST Act … you should have checked your draft first. Just spoke to Union Minister @MORTHIndia @nitin_gadkari Sb regarding the situation along NH 44 & the lack of connectivity with the rest of the country along this vital link. The frustration of fruit growers is understandable. They have been very patient for the first few days but watching their hard work rot because @nhidcl is unable to stabilise the highway, their patience has worn thin & that is totally understandable. Some concrete steps will be taken within the next 24 hours to address this problem but I will wait for that to happen before I say any more about the proposed plan of action.

🍎 Kashmir Apples in the Global Supply Chain: From Glut to Leverage Half of Jammu & Kashmir’s fruit land is under apple — 172,000 hectares producing 2.06 million tonnes annually. That’s nearly nine apples out of every ten grown in India when combined with Himachal and Uttarakhand. Analysing recent data alongside emerging global trends presents a powerful opportunity for action. Three districts — Baramulla (494,000 t), Shopian (264,000 t), Anantnag (262,000 t) — contribute almost half of the total crop. Rising productivity: Average yield has improved from ~11.1 t/ha in 2017–18 to ~12.0 t/ha in 2023–24, with a peak in 2022–23. The price squeeze: Average wholesale price per box has dropped ₹733 → ₹458 in two years (~37% fall). Imports of ~470,000 tonnes in 2023, arrive just as our harvest peaks. 📦 Why timing is everything (see chart) Sep–Dec dispatch peak from Kashmir overlaps with import arrival peak — creating a glut and driving prices down. Current CA storage covers only 13% of our crop (270,374 tonnes). The rest must be sold quickly after picking. 🌏 The global context 👉World apple output ~84 million tonnes; China produces nearly half. 👉Weather shocks in Europe open short-term market gaps. 👉Our apple exports are small (~22,000 t), so the main battle is competing with imports at home. The way forward is clear 👉Double controlled-atmosphere capacity in the next five years, especially in Baramulla, Budgam, and Anantnag. 👉Use storage to stagger sales into lean months, when prices can be 20–40% higher. 👉Pair with grading, traceability, and processing near orchards to lift quality and add value. Kashmir already has the scale, quality, and heritage. The missing link is market timing — and cold storage is the key to unlocking it.
