@JoyceCarolOates This is true, of course, and my post was over the top, but still, I find saying “well they’re both geniuses” a cop out. They offer very different visions of the world. Pick a side!

both Dostoyevsky & Tolstoy are brilliant in those chapters, or passages, in which they are fully in control of their material; in both writers, in their longer works, you will find passages that are uninspired, seemingly unedited. writing for serial publication in the 19th century had its advantages but also disadvantages.
if you love Dostoyevsky it may be for his iconoclastic, intellectual ideas which he presents dramatically, often as monologues (Ivan, "Grand Inquisitor"); Tolstoy is the master of seeing, feeling, immediate sensations, astonishing descriptions of the physical world & subjective states of mind as mercurial as D.H. Lawrence.
Dostoyevsky's settings are all interior, over-heated, vague as dreams; he had no interest in "seeing" the visual world as Tolstoy did. (yes, I much admire both; over all, my favorite is "Crime and Punishment.")

Just finished rereading War & Peace and while I love the book it also reconfirmed me in my opinion that if you prefer Tolstoy to Dostoevsky you need your head examined.

I'm not sure why Jaadugar was compared to Orb in the first place, but that comparison feels pretty shallow... it’s far closer to palace dramas like Ooku, Raven of the Inner Palace, and The Apothecary Diaries, focusing on court politics & power more than anything else

Whoever made the connection that Jaadugar and Orb has the same premise is wrong. Jaadugar is more similar to Nippon Sangoku or Vinland Saga. A person who's everything has been taken to them at the beggining of the series and will then rise through the ranks to get their revenge.

@Lee_lovesbooks I am not a fan of publishers doling out advanced reader copies so the book has reviews before it's even officially released. There's so many business practices of modern publishing that I think is so stupid.

If you're going to be reading something before it comes out the least you could do is read it in private then talk about it day of release. At least respect the authors, I'm not judging anyone but I do think you should be more private because this could ruin things in the future

A 22-year-old student teacher in Illinois sent a private Snapchat message to her boyfriend and two roommates.
A student had walked up to her laptop and deleted her lesson plan mid-class. frustrated, she typed something like "should I shoot him" with a gun emoji. venting. four people. private group chat.
An hour later, police walked into her school and arrested her.
here's what happened in between.
Snapchat's AI scanned the private message. flagged it as a potential threat. automatically reported it to the FBI. the FBI forwarded it to local law enforcement. deputies arrived at the school within the hour.
she cooperated immediately. handed over her phone. when shown the message she said: "oh yes. okay. yeah. i'm realizing that was a bad joke. i did not mean it at all serious at all."
police determined she was not a threat. school officials determined she was not a threat. prosecutors reviewed and issued a disorderly conduct charge. she was released the next morning. she lost her student teaching placement.
This means:
Snapchat scans private messages.
Not just public posts or stories. private group chats between you and your closest contacts. automated AI. no human reviewed it first, got flagged and reported.
Snapchat AI → FBI → local police → school → arrest.
in under an hour.
Snapchat's privacy policy says it may share your information with law enforcement when it believes there is a risk of harm. the definition of "risk of harm" is determined by an algorithm.
you are not told when a message is flagged.
you are not told when a report is filed.
you find out when the police arrive.
the message was private.
it wasn't.
