Thrilled to finally get my hands on this new book on Tojo by Peter Mauch from @Harvard_Press! We've waited decades for an authoritative biography of Tojo in English. Can't wait to read this!

It's that time of year again! @Sudo_Journal is calling for fiction, non-fiction, and poetry for its 2026 volume! The theme is "Borderline" but we're really just looking for weird and interesting as always! sudojournal.com/2026/03/30/cal…

@MrLeeDragon I once had a copy of Faust from 'The Dennis Wheatley Library'. It was weird branding!

Dennis Wheatley - "The Prince of Thriller Writers". Now a largely forgotten author, once second only to Agatha Christie in terms of sales.

@kristenauthor It's one of those cases where it really matters who finishes second. There wasn't much between 2nd and 3rd. If the UAP candidate had come second, the independent's preferences would have been much kinder to Curtin - maybe he could have won? john.curtin.edu.au/fremantle/stat…

@kristenauthor On the first count, it was 42% for Curtin, 31% William Watson and 27% for H.K. Watson. But the preference flow between the Watsons was 90%, so Curtin lost 44% to 56%.

At the 1931 election, John Curtin was up against two Watsons in the seat of Fremantle. William Watson (IND), the bacon baron, wanted the parliament to elect a cabinet & then be compulsorily retired, leaving the cabinet to handle everything. trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/arti…

@pjfmullins Haha, I think I came up with that, unless I borrowed it unconsciously! Remember Watsonia bacon when I was a kid.

There was something so poignant about listening to Cooke on the radio in the early 2000s. It felt a living connection to the distant past, a voice so full of the years.
Prof. Frank McDonough@FXMC1957

24 March 1946. Alastair Cooke began his first Letter from America programme on BBC Radio. The initial contract was for a 13 week series, but Cooke’s intimate style proved such a success that the series ran for 58 years and only ended with his death in 2004.

H.K. Watson (UAP), prominent secessionist, wanted to abolish the House of Reps altogether and give WA control over customs. And they said Curtin was the radical one. (He lost to W. Watson, his old nemesis.)

TFW one of the local government candidates says they work as a 'public policy research scholar' and it turns out to be for the IPA... (Not strictly untrue!)
