@JakeLandauTO @pr0ductplacemnt I think there’s an obscure translation that uses the Greek meter, but I could be wrong? I have to rewatch some lectures, if I find it I’ll send you a link! Wilson originally tried using the longer line but felt it was clunky in English, Maybe someone will crack the code one day.

The most egregious thing about this post is that it purposely formats Wilson’s translation so that the lines aren’t in iambic pentameter, which is her most brilliant contribution to the canon of Odyssey translations.

@bfwriter @JRROwens the reader into thinking different words are being used, but to explore the different meanings of the words and to signal importance. In an oral story repitition helps people remember. When reading repetition often makes readers "check out" So the words very from Athena with th

@gdholtby Oh I understand now! By putting the text in the chart the lines are broken. "Man" appears on its own line for example, that’s why I included the screenshot. Reading it in the chart intuitively/casually you pause in areas completely unintended by all the translators present.

@NathanLongs You say they're breaking up her lines so they're not in iambic pentametic, can you give a specific example of how the lines are being broken in that way?

@JRROwens I think a lot of the discourse is just shit posting my people who haven’t read the Odyssey. Nothing serious, but there are definitely misogynist stroking the flames.

Didn’t. She has stated in more recent interviews that, after translating the Iliad, she probably could have allowed herself more lines without compromising pace. But I applaud the decision! Mainly because her translation sparked a love of the Odyssey in me.

And while other translators (Chapman, Fitzgerald, ext) used Iambic Pentameter, Emily Wilson's translation of the Odyssey is THE FIRST English translation to have the same number of lines as the original Greek text. She prioritizes translating speed in a way past translators

@gdholtby It is! I recommend the audiobook, Claire Danes’ delivery is gripping. I’m not an expert on Shakespeare or Milton, but out loud every line has ten syllables. My eye was tricked by how complicated has more syllables than wandered at a glance, hence the different line lengths

@NathanLongs Does it? Where are the line breaks supposed to be? It seems like you could definitely parse it as tell ME aBOUT a COMpliCATed MAN. Did they leave something out?

@FremenNat My first post probably should have stressed this more. By having the same number of lines in English and Greek, Wilson accurately translated the speed in which the poem is read. Thank you for this point! I may add this into my original thread.

@FremenNat Love that you brought up Chapman, if we had read his translation at my high school, it would have definitely been a much better experience! His lines are absolutely beautiful and are best when read aloud. Wilson limits her poem to the same number of lines in English as the Greek-
