Georgina de la Fuente, a political science professor at the Tecnológico de Monterrey University, said that what the vote shows “is that the small parties are not going to give their unconditional support (to Morena), they are not going to put their survival at risk.”

🇲🇽Mexico's President Sheinbaum's "proposal wanted to reduce the cost of elections by 25%, including 💰 for the @INEMexico & money given to all parties. Experts said the changes could endanger the running of Mexico’s elections & make [MORENA] stronger." apnews.com/article/mexico…

🇺🇸Pete Hegseth says it's fake news that the Trump administration wildly underestimated the potential impact of Iran's asymmetric response to U.S. military intervention. He lauds Trump ally David Ellison's takeover of Warner Brothers & CNN as a prelude to more Trump-friendly news
Acyn@Acyn

Hegseth: No quarter, no mercy for our enemies. Yet some in the press just can't stop. More fake news from CNN reports that the Trump administration underestimated the Iran war's impact on the strait of hormuz. The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.

"🇺🇸🛢️The extent of [Trump's] miscalculation was laid bare in recent days, as Iran threatened to fire at commercial oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz. commercial shipping has come to a standstill in the Gulf, & oil prices have spiked" nytimes.com/2026/03/10/us/…

"Mencho’s contribution to [🇲🇽's] conflict was to match the military’s firepower & raise the bar of narco-paramilitary forces. He built up squads of highly trained & well-armed killers & [used] armored drones & land mines against soldiers," Grillo writes. newyorker.com/news/the-lede/…
Ioan Grillo@ioangrillo

Psyched to make my debut in the New Yorker with this profile of the bloody life and (grim) legacy of El Mencho "He was ruthless taking over business” Chicago cocaine king Margarito Flores says. His corrido goes: “They say I'm very violent, It’s true, why should I lie about it?”

"For months, Mexican Cabinet officials had discussed the challenges of capturing Oseguera and weighed the likely violent fallout from his arrest. Officials believed that if Sheinbaum’s administration didn’t act, Trump might launch a unilateral raid on Mexican soil"

🇲🇽"The Jalisco cartel is known for its terrorist tactics. Last year, cartel forces drone-bombed a prosecutor’s office in Tijuana & shot dead Carlos Manzo, a prominent mayor in Michoacán state. And in 2020 they attacked then-Mexico City Police Chief Omar García Harfuch."

🇲🇽"El Mencho, the powerful drug lord the Mexican army killed, had created 1 of the most advanced security operations devised to protect a cartel boss. His system relied on high-powered weaponry, ~400 gunmen, bomb-delivering drones &, sometimes, land mines."
Steve Fisher@Stevelfisher

My story on the raid against Mencho: Mexico did the raid, fearing if they didn't the U.S. would take Mencho out unilaterally US Special Forces came to MX and trained elite teams on how to take him down The CIA and FBI provided his precise location #nt=00000175-f83a-d12c-a177-fffe3ef00002-showMedia-liG0promoMedium-1col" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">latimes.com/world-nation/s…

🇲🇽🇺🇸Mexico ranks abysmally low in terms of Rule of Law. The U.S. differs greatly in the strength of its institutions. Most murders in Mexico go unsolved. In Mexico, violence goes unpunished and police take extra precautions such as wearing masks. Not required in U.S.
Ryan Saavedra@RyanSaavedra

A ridiculous post by Chris Murphy Virtually all Mexican armed forces wear masks during operations against the cartels because cartels will hunt these men down and kill them and their families Same thing goes for a lot of law enforcement in Mexico

🇲🇽🥑💰👮I actually disagree with this--- there is a long history in Mexico of drug trafficking being used as seed capital for the avocado industry and a lot of overlap between the two sectors. theguardian.com/cities/2017/ma…
🥂@MishimaFudanshi

Sinaloa is high-key the breadbasket of the country while Michoacán is basically just the avocado printing region. Drug trafficking money is very disconnected from the economy at large because it (funnily enough) doesn't trickle down.

@ahern_doug @andreamgal the tweet is hard to defend. It uses alarmist language & differs from State Department guidance. What was the goal of the tweet? To help protect U.S. tourists? If so-- a statement on the serious uncertainty & risk + encouraging people to stay indoors would have been better.

@andreamgal @NathanielParish Clearly the outbreak of violence as sensationalized. I posted in that. And I criticized that Senator for contributing to it At the same time, we do not know what source of information he had to judge its credibility

🇲🇽"Killing [El Mencho] unleashed a wave of shootings, arson and blockades across the country, & now Mexicans are bracing for even more violence ahead, as competing factions jockey for power & confront the government. It is a cycle Mexico has lived through many times before."

"The killing of [El Mencho] shows how the tense interplay between Trump & Sheinbaum — 2 leaders w/ starkly different styles but an unlikely camaraderie — has fundamentally reshaped the 🇺🇸-🇲🇽 relationship, particularly on security," @jacknicas explains. nytimes.com/2026/02/24/wor…
