Also, highbrow elites have lost the aura of sophistication & dignity, unmasked by things like social media & the Epstein files. Highbrow & lowbrow are not as obvsly distinct as they once were; there is a much more porous boundary between them (e.g. pop scholars like JBP), etc.

This is not unique to Prots. The era of consensus brokers is over, & as Sasse points out in the Douthat interview, this is more a reflection of our loss of common culture everywhere, not just in the church. No more highbrow or likeable TV networks, newspapers, politicians, etc.

Ie Prot conversions to Rome, there is not a single nationally known highbrow Protestant intellectual who is remotely likable left after the death of Tim Keller. The more I think about it, the more Im convinced he was a dam holding back neo-Fundamentalism.

One of the more disturbing things I’ve observed over the last few years is the lack of discernment exercised by those who platformed & encouraged this man’s project. This was not hard to see coming, and is proof a “unique cast of mind” will never suffice in the work of theology.
