What a difference a day makes. Yesterday we published a report calling $POET a stock promote and demonstrating it qualified as a PFIC — sticking U.S. holders with brutal tax consequences. Less than 12 hours later, $POET reversed its prior position and admitted it IS a PFIC for 2025. They also announced plans to redomicile in the U.S. to avoid the issue in future years. Both pillars of our thesis just got validated by the company itself. They concealed PFIC status until called out. And they're planning to abandon their country of incorporation rather than fix the underlying business. If they could deploy capital into real products and real revenue, they wouldn't have a PFIC problem in the first place. The redomicile is a tacit admission that selling stock — not products — is the business. Why does this matter to you TODAY? Because there is misinformation circulating (much of it from overseas accounts who don't deal with U.S. tax) saying you don't need to file anything because $POET had a loss. That is wrong, and it could cost you.

$POET was $6.89 on Friday. It's going to open today above $13. That's a 85% increase in 3 trading days. I'm not an owner of $POET, nor has it been on my watchlist so take this with a pinch of salt...but here's my current opinion: $POET has: -> Low revenue but a real $5.6M production order, 1.6T optical receiver with $SMTC ramping up this year, and a broadening pipeline. -> $313M cash for a $1.6B market cap (meaning you're looking at ~$1.3B ex-cash EV). That's the positives...but: Stocks in this thematic can trade +12-15x NTM sales quite easily. $AAOI is at 12x NTM sales now, $LITE is at 15x now. So assuming $111M in revenue (in line with estimates) in FY27, and a 12x multiple on that, you're looking at an EV of 1.33B (and then add on $300M in cash for $1.6B market cap today (which is right where we are now). Even if you make it 15x NTM sales, you're looking at ~2B market cap which for the downside risk here, does not make sense. So I just don't see the upside massively here for the risk unless you think $POET should trade +30x NTM sales (which could be feasible)... $SIVE does for example. However, at all time highs, I'd never be basing an investment decision on a stock having to trade at +30x sales for it to justify an investment. Granted I could be being pessimistic, but it's hard to see how this one plays out as a potential +100-200% from here over the next 24 months which is ultimately what we always strive for. With that being said, huge congrats to bulls who got in this one ~$7.
