We see our home planet as a whole, lit up in spectacular blues and browns. A green aurora even lights up the atmosphere. That's us, together, watching as our astronauts make their journey to the Moon.

This evening I attended a fascinating Zoom lecture by Dr Duncan Sutherland. One highlight: the #arms of the Worshipful Company of #Educators (2013): the sinister supporter, an #owl (wisdom) holding a #mouse, a clever nod to the computer mouse. #heraldry Tradition meets modernity.

OTD in 1473 - birth of James IV of Scotland. As well as being one of the most successful Stewart Kings, James was also an important figure in the final years of the English #WarsoftheRoses.
His father James III’s decision to break off James’s betrothal to Cecily of York without repaying the money he had received for her dowry prompted #EdwardIV to order the 1482 invasion of Scotland. This expedition led by Edward’s brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later #RichardIII) resulted in the recapture of Berwick upon Tweed, which has remained part of England ever since.
Interestingly, this childhood experience doesn’t seem to have made James hostile to the House of York as an adult. He issued a safe conduct to the Ricardian loyalist Francis Lovell to travel to Scotland after #HenryVII’s forces defeated the Yorkists at the Battle of Stoke in 1487. Lovell never arrived at the Scottish court & is presumed to have died before he could reach the safe haven he had been offered.
James became a strong supporter of Richard of England/ Perkin Warbeck, the second Yorkist claimant to challenge Henry VII. He appears to have become convinced that the claimant was truly Richard, Duke of York, the younger of the #PrincesintheTower. He also saw strategic advantage in supporting a claimant who had been recognised by other European rulers -Maximilian, Margaret of York & the Spanish Catholic Monarchs Isabella & Ferdinand.
Richard of England/ Warbeck fell in love with James’s cousin, Catherine Gordon, daughter of the Earl of Huntly soon after his arrival at the Scottish court in 1495. A copy of a lengthy love letter he sent her survives in which he repeatedly refers to himself as her ‘slave’, praises her divine beauty, declares ‘all [his] hopes rest in [her] & in [her] alone’ & says he ‘has ever been devoted to [her] from the first hour [he] saw [her].’
The couple were married with James’s consent, most likely on 13 January 1496. James gave his friend a ‘spousing gown’ of white damask & hosted a tournament in the newlyweds’ honour, with Richard/Warbeck wearing armour in regal purple brocade.
James invaded Northumberland with Richard/ Warbeck in September 1496. This invasion proved unsuccessful when the anticipated northern English support for the claimant failed to materialise, perhaps because the presence of his Scottish troops & their destructive behaviour deterred participation from
those might otherwise have been inclined to support the House of York.
In 1497 Richard/ Warbeck left Scotland in a ship funded by James. Richard/Warbeck then landed in Cornwall on 7 September 1497 & attempted another failed invasion of England, which this time resulted in his capture by Henry VII’s forces at Beaulieu Abbey.
James launched a coordinated invasion of Northumberland & laid siege to Norham Castle in August 1497. This led to the negotiation of a seven year truce between Scotland & England, which was subsequently extended into the 1502 Treaty of Perpetual Peace & included the 1503 marriage of James to Henry VII’s eldest daughter, Margaret Tudor.
This marriage was the origin of the later Stuart claim to the crown of England, which resulted in the accession of James VI of Scotland as James I of England in 1603 & the subsequent creation of Great Britain.
James IV himself meanwhile became the last monarch in the British Isles to die in battle, falling at the Battle of Flodden in 1513 after he had invaded England as part of an Auld Alliance response to his brother-in-law #HenryVIII’s invasion of France.
